Wanted: 1 87mm Piston

« on: May 19, 2005, 08:29:11 PM »
I'm working on a top secret, low budget project and I don't want to put a mis-matched set of pistons in it.  I will if I have to, but I would really rather find one more type 1 87mm (1641) piston that uses 2mm rings.  All I need is the piston and wrist pin.

Anybody have one they want to part with?   :?:

Hmm !    I will look in my "left over" pile.   I don`t know why you should worry about mis-matched P/Cs. My old `64 van had 83mm on #3 and #4,  85mm on # 1 and 2 (out of the floor).  The only problem I had is that the van smoke the tires on right turns and barely had enough power to get around left turns.  :-k

Zen, I hope you can find one!!! I just checked the weight on your pistons...
3 are within 0.1 of a gram and the odd ball is 9.1 grams lighter.

Heck Far Kile ,  If I can`t  find a 87mm piston, How `bout bolting a couple tire weights in that light piston.  I have some Fat Back in the freezer you can use for taking up the slop in the rod bearings and couple of guitar strings you can wrap around the thrust bearing to "adjust" the end play. Not only will the engine be in "tune",It will smell like country ham frying while cruising down the road. Now what in the hell would be wrong with that ?

I REALLY, REALLY hate to skimp on this engine . . . but funds are somewhat limited.  My theroy is:

1 - Do the bottom end right.  You have to have good foundation.  If the bottom end goes out, it takes everything else with it.  Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, don't care to go again.

2 - Make sure the heads are not going to fly apart any minute.  A dropped exhaust valve can reek havoic to an engine running near it's red line!  Been there as well.  That's a really expensive T-shirt.  Don't want another one!

So if I've got to save $$$, the pistons and cylinders seem to be the most logical place to do it.  I've got a set of pretty good looking 87mm cylinders . . . and I've got 4 87mm pistons.  Problem is, one is an oddball.  Being that it's not close enough to ballance, using it is out of the question.  So my options now are to find a decent 87mm piston that matches my other 3, buy a new set of pistons/cylinders, or scavenge the set off the engine I just pulled out of Homer.  I've already got 8 scavenged engines sitting in the garage, the last thing I need is to take a running engine and add it to that pile.  I don't really know if have the money to buy a new set (I know, I should of thought about that when I was ordering $60 worth of remote control Herbies  #-o ) . . . unless maybe I just clean up this block and put it back together with the old bearings . . . they really didn't look that bad . . .  8-[  But really, as long as the bottom end and the heads hold out, it's not that hard to pull it out and slap some new pistons/cylinders on it in a month or two.

So, actually, trying to find a match to my other 87 pistons is a "contengentcy plan."  If I can get the bottom end and the heads together CORRECTLY and have enough money left over, new pistons and cylinders ARE my plan of choice.  Just trying to be ready if that doesn't happen.   8)

I'm scrapping the 87mm idea and going with stock 85.5mm piston/cylinders.  I've found 4 piston/cylinders in my stash that are almost new, so I'm sticking them in between my jam-up bottom end and freshened up heads.  That is, if I can find a good case and get a jam-up bottom end assembled!  The Godfather imformed me this evening that the case I planning on using is a boat anchor.    I've got a couple of other cases that David looked at and said "should" be "ok" . . . but he seemed a little concerned about using them as the foundation for an engine that would be pushing a bay window bus down the road.

I dug around in the garage and I've found a couple more cases that "look" to me to be ok.  I'll have to get them cleaned up and haul 'em up to the Johnston machine shop and have the Godfather give his blessing on one of them then gather up my parts and start putting this thing together.

If neither one of these cases are good, I'm getting down to my 40 horse stuff.  If I put a 40 horse in it, I'll have to change its name to Homer the Pooper Bus!

I could always take the tranny and reduction gears out from under "Lucky" and graft them into Homer . . . it probalby wouldn't run any faster, but I'd have 4 gears to pick from instead of 3!

Did someone say "40-horse?" Now you're speaking my language!
Why don't you take a page from the FV book and lighten the other 3 pistons to match the one? I know 9 grams is a lot, but you might get a lot out of the skirts and a bunch of tiny nips out of the underside.

I've got a dual-port you might have David check out if none of yours will work. You also might talk me out of a TYPE IV that God intended to be put in that bus (sorry, it just came out)! We could talk trade with those wheels and old pan.

I took another load of junk over to the godfather's place yesterday.  I've got a good case!  WOOO HOOO!  It's a fuel injected case, so I've got to put a electric pump on Homer now . . . but since I've got a BOSCH regulator I've probably got the juice to run one.  So after tearing down about 6 junk engines, I've got:

A good case.  Duel relief, bus mount points (not drilled and taped though), standard thrust and line bored .020.

A good crank.  Not quite perfect, but still well within the wear limit.  Turned .010 on the rods and mains.

A good set of used rods.  All within about a 3 gram spread.

A good used cam.

A good set of heads.  Bead blasted, seats dressed up, guides checked and new exhaust valves installed by the godfather.  Still got one broken stud to replace, but there's more than enough to thread a nut all the way onto it left, so it should be no problem.

David has me new bearings (cam, rods, and mains) on the way.

Got a new gland nut.

Got a new gasket set with the main seal.

I'm still working on a set of lifters.  I may have to buy a set of them new.

Got a new (well, the are far from new, but they are still unused) push rod tubes.

Other than the bearings and valves, I didn't have to buy anything . . . I think I'll spring for BRAND NEW stock 85.5 pistons and cylinders!

AH !   New pistons/ clyinders ?   Homer can really flex his muscles now. Just think, Homers "ticker" will be all fresh from the bottom up all at the same time .  Kinda makes you all "weepy eyed" doesn`t  it.
