Vanagon head needed

« on: April 27, 2009, 10:39:06 PM »
I need a cylinder head for a 81 Vanagon...the one that came off the engine is junk.  #3 cyl. dropped both valve seats and cracked from the exhaust port all the way to the cylinder seating surface.  Called Tri state 3 times since Friday and still don't know if they have a good 1 or not, they just keep telling me to call back. :?   I found a couple different places on line selling new ones, but it sure would easier to get if it was local.  Just thought I would ask...you never know what folks have laying around!
Thanks.
Rick.

Rick. Welcome to Type-4 engines.   This is what they do with reckless abandonment . I would "Hold out" until you can find a set of 914 heads.  These heads have relocated spark plug holes and seem to hang together far longer for some reason than the standard Van head or you can get a set heads from our dear dear friend Mr.Raby at Massive 4 for only $1,500 a "pop" the last time I checked. You had better check the other head very closely  as it doesn't care which side it drops a valve seat on due to the sorry ass cooling system.
You are fix'n to find out why most old school air cool mechanics run away when you mention Type-4 and engine problems in the same sentence .
You would think that VW would have  solved this problem after 8-9 years but they never did. They just did away with the engine and produced the "Water Boxer". Another engineering marvel that came with a case of "stop-leak".
I will more than likely be "trounce" on for these comments but if you HAD to work on 4-5 of them a day at the dealership, you would understand why I have such a undying love for them

Well I understand the idea of avoiding these, but it's too late!   This is for a customer that no doubt has the same cracking on the other head, just no valve seat issues yet.   I pulled the head off the engine still in the vehicle and priced a single head R&R.  I'm pretty sure the guy will croak if he gets a est. for a complete engine...but it is what it is.  I'm gonna price him a new head and see what he wants to do...Too much trouble in my book, but it ain't my ride! :D

You know, I've seen a LOT of late bay windows converted over to type 1 engines, but I've never seen a type 1 powered vanagon . . . yet.  Well, I guess you would have to use a type 3 cooling system wouldn't you?   :-k  Just thinking out loud . . .  8)

I checked to see if VW had any of these sitting around in the depot but they're showing 0 stock left.  However, there appears to be a dealer in New York that has a couple in stock - part # 071-101-061-DX.  Their phone # is 718-728-8111.

There's also this listing from Bus Boys.

Thanks!  I got lucky today, bought a whole engine from tri-state...seemed like a pretty cool guy when I met him in person...and the head I need is in good shape.  Now I just gotta remove a broken exhaust stud and put it all back together! 8)  Oh yeah, forgot about crossing my fingers...praying to all the Gods...and pretty much just hoping beyond all hope that this thing runs o.k.!

OH and have fun getting the exhaust to seal up good against the head(stupid copper rings) and pray you dont strip out an exhaust stud when tightening the exhaust to the head.... dont ask how I know this... too loose and you have a nice BIG exhaust leak.... too tight and you lose a stud... ENJOY!!!

If " Chicken" got a real Vanagon head the exhaust ports use a real gasket instead of the stupid copper ring. It only took VW eight years to figure that one out. There is nothing like a Auto maker staying on top of things

Yeah, real Vanagon head..no copper gaskets for me! :D   The studs were all crap on the exhaust, broke 1 and pulled another out when I  removed the heater box.  I should be getting it back from the machine shop tomorrow...then the real fun begins!
