Steering Wheels - Part Quality

« on: May 14, 2004, 01:49:13 PM »
Has anyone on here bought a steering wheel from

www.mooneyes.com
Part Number: VWI-180

This is one of the Empi GT wooden steering wheels (reproduction).   I am just wondering if it is of good quality, and will last longer than my current aftermarket steering wheel.  I have a 1971 Karmann Ghia, and am considering installing this steering wheel, but wanted some feedback before I shelled out to get it.

Thanks!

I have seen some reproduction EMPI style steering wheels like that one before.  Don't know if they were the same brand, but they looked like good quality wheels . . . and they are a whole lot cheaper than an original in mint condtion!

I ended up shelling out to get the steering wheel.  Total cost was $268, and I got it in yesterday.  I was pretty surprised with it.  The adapter is made of billet aluminum (75 bucks) and is very nice.  The steering wheel (15") is much lighter than the formula france (13") wheel that I had on previously.  I like the Empi wooden wheel, but am not sold yet on how durable it is going to last.  Time will tell.  My formula france style one was starting to turn pink as my wedding ring was wearing down the black leather revealing the pink underlayer.
