Rebuilt Transaxles

« on: November 05, 2012, 05:52:15 PM »
I will be rebuilding T1 transaxles and some engines in my spare time and wondered if there was a need around the Chattanooga? I grew up working in a family foreign car repair shop and learned from my cousin who was vw factory trained. Let me know your thoughts?

If I keep the '63, I'd be interested in a '68 swing axle w/12v and a freeway flyer gearing.

Not sure Travis. Gathering prices for parts. Do you buy short or long blocks? Stock build?

Don't know what shipping would be but DJ's parts from Easley, SC was at the sevierville shows this year and had parts CHEAP. I wanna say he had 85.5s for $90, cranks for about the same, everything was significantly cheaper than every parts store I've been to. I'll see if I have his card.

Ed's foreign car parts in Gadsden, AL can also be a good source for parts, but he is a machine shop and builds engines, so I doubt he'd cut you too much of a break. Even so, a good source for parts and he is fairly close if need be.

Be careful with Cheap parts. They can be good looking junk.

That is a problem. I am use to the good ol mahle or cima pistons and this AA brand doesn't cut it. People want a deal but in the long run your better off putting an extra $50 or so dollars to obtain the quality.

Tony, You are going to find out why most of VW shops around here have gone away. You can not make a living just working on VW's. Some of the reasons are : Bad parts, no parts, cranky customers who won't pay(not all customers of course) or just want something cheap or free. Its hard to pay the light bill that way.  I hope you are successful because no one else is around anymore that knows what they are doing with our little Critters for the most part

This will be a spare time thing. My real job is a corporate pilot so the bills get paid. I learned early what makes the VW's tick because I had a awesome teacher and besides the satisfaction of building the engines and transaxles is something I truely enjoy. I have two or three IRS's already built and waiting so we will see. Any thoughts or advise is appreciated.
