Need a key blank? - I just 15 from eBay

« on: March 05, 2002, 09:01:08 AM »
I just sent off payment for 15 VW key blanks I found on eBay.  I don't know exactly what they fit, but from the picture they look like late 60's - early 70s.

Most any place that has an old key cutting machine can cut these keys, but nobody stocks the blanks anymore.  Let me know if you are ever in need of a blank and I'll see I have what you need.

 ;)

Well, they haven't gotten here yet.  I will let them go at my cost (and I got them dirt cheap!) to club members for their own personal use.

You'll have to pay a hardware store or locksmith to cut them, and they will probably charge you the same as they would if they furnished the blank, so check and see if they have a blank first!  Some places still have a few old blanks on the rack, but they are getting pretty hard to find.  And you need to be very picky about who you let cut your key!  Just because a kid has an ACE Hardware shirt on and knows how to turn the cutter on and off doesn't mean he knows how to operate it.  You need someone who will get it right the first time.  Let the kids learn on master lock blanks and keep them away from your hard to find VW blanks!

I've had keys made at Ace and Lowe's before for my Volkswagen and never got any of them to work. If you need a VW key made, try Rick's Lock and Key on Brainerd Road. I brought my own key blank in (ordered from West Coast Metric), and he only charged me a dollar to cut it. The best part however is that the key actually works!

Russ is right about Ace Hardware.  We have had keys made there and most of the time they don't work.  Rick's is a very reliable place.  I haven't ever had a problem with the keys made there and we have used them lots of times for stuff at work.
