Keys Cut by Code - Cheapest Price Around!

« on: March 15, 2004, 12:19:10 AM »
If you've lost the key to your 67 - 79 air-cooled VW (except later Type 4s) or if your key is worn out and you can't get a copy of it to work, I can cut you a new one from the code.

Full time locksmiths charge anywhere from $15 to $50 for this service. I've got a pretty low tech way of doing it (code keys and a very basic key machine) . . . but since I'm not having to pay for a $3000 code machine I can do it cheaper! $10 for one code cut key and one copied from that key. Your money back if the key fails to work! Scenic City Volks Folks members get a 25% discount.

These are cut on Ilco brand key blanks. They are high quality nickel-plated brass and have the basic shape of the original keys, but they don't have a VW logo or cutout.

Right now I can only cut keys with VW Key Profiles K, L, M, and R. You can find the code stamped into the door handles (inside the door, so the handle has to be removed) or stamped into the lock cylinder of the ignition switch. The lock cylinder has to be removed from the housing to see it. The code will be something like this - 24K067. There are other formats for key codes, but the only ones I can cut are always two numbers, a letter, and three numbers. The letter will be K or M on types 1 and 3 and L or R on type 2s.

If you're not in the area, you can email me the code and pay me with PayPal (zenph@comcast.net). I'll mail you the keys but I have to charge $1.50 extra to cover PayPal charges and postage.

Zen, I'm going to need a couple of extra keys, and I may be in Chattanooga later some weekend. Is there any way possible that someone in our club could help me get the code from the handle or cylinder? I'm still somewhat of a "newbie" when it comes to VW's, and would need some assistance. I would be willing to pay for help, or buy lunch, whatever, to compensate them for their time.
Thanks, man!

The code is easy on 68 or later bug.  It just takes a few seconds to pull the outer door handle off or put it back on.  Open the door and look under the edge of the door seal right at the end of the handle.  Remove the big phillips screw, slide the handle back a little (towards the front of the car), then lift the lock end of it and pull it back towards the edge of the door.  It comes right out.

The code is a number stamped on the side of the handle (on the part that's inside the door).  On a 67-70 Bug it'll be
##K###, on 71-79 it'll be ##M###.  The two digits before the letter will be from 11 to 72, the three after the letter will be 001 to 110.  That code can be looked up in a code book and will tell which notches need to be cut to what depth . . . unless someone like me has gotten a hold of it and changed the tumbler waffers without filing off the old code.

Does anyone have any original pre-67 steel VW keys that are in good shape that I could borrow?  I've figured out a way to create code keys for other profiles, but I need a lot of good, original, factory cut keys.  I'll only need the keys for a few minutes, and they will not be harmed in the process.  It doesn't matter if they are rusty or corroded as long as the notches are not worn.

I have already created half of a set of code keys for the SC, SU, and SV profiles (61-66 Bugs and lots of later model glove boxes).  If you help me create the code keys, I'll make you all the keys you need at no charge (on aftermarket blanks . . . or on NOS blanks if you provide them).
