Info on 68

« on: June 30, 2009, 08:32:19 PM »
I am wondering if anyone has seats that would fit a 68.  I have thought about after market, but think original would be cheaper till I can afford upgrades.  I am also wondering if anyone has a gas tank too. I am also looking for a website that would list what parts are interchangable from year to year...engine parts, body parts and other stuff.  I have had my 68 for about 3 years, but have a 2 year old...so no work on bug since he was born.  I am just looking and getting my feet wet with this site, so I can start educating myself on it and networking with others.  Thx to whoever

Seats and Tank

« Reply #2 on: July 01, 2009, 08:05:16 AM »
I would like to come see them.  I haven't a clue what a fair price would be.  I guess it depends on what condition the seats are in.  I dont mind some tears in material cause I will eventually replace or redo seats, but they do have to slide on original tracks and possibly recline.  Does the gas tank have any rust in it?  I through the one that came with mine away cause of all the rust in the bottom.  I found out it would be cheaper to just buy new one vs boiling out old one.  Where are they located.  I live in Rossville and could come by next week to look at them...depending on where they are.  The seats may be right, I am just new to bug stuff and am learning.  I got real good with Jeeps cause of my YJ I had.  Bugs, Jeeps, Motorcycles, High-end cars all have there own launguage.  I am learning Bug.  Thx for the reply tho.

Just so you'll know if you don't already . . . any seats from 1970 and back will fit your seat tracks.  68 was the first year for high-back seats, but the tracks didn't change until 71.

Thx for heads up Zen.  Hey Zen do you know a website that would allow me to look up info like the seats on?  I would like to start researching what differences the different years have.  I think it would be neat to be able to guess the year just by looking at little details, also I would like to know what parts from what years would fit my bug.  Thx

The link below doesn't list everything, but it's got a bunch of year to year changes. What I like about it is that it isn't geared to US models only.  The Beetle produced for the US market and the ones for other countries weren't always the same on the changes . . . for instance, the US got IRS rear suspension in '68 on the autosticks and from '69 on for all Beetles.  Some other markets NEVER got anything but the swing axles.  Some markets got front disc brakes standard on the Beetles as early as '67, but for some reason, the US market never got them.  The last sedans sold in the US were 1977 models, but they made Beetles for some other markets up until July of 2003.  Sometimes we here in the states look at a Beetle and say, "someone has modified that, 'cause VW didn't put that on Beetles that year."  Well, they might not have offically brought a Beetle into the US and sold it through their dealership network with that particular part or option, but a good number of Beetles sold in other markets found there way here eventually.

Another good resource to explore (if you haven't already found it) is http://www.thesamba.com

Thats kinda like the conversation I had with a customer of mine from Sweden.  He used to be a big VW nut and was very interested in the fact that I was restoring a Beetle.  We were talking about STD Beetles and Super Beetles.  He told me that there was no such thing as a Super for '71 or '72 in either Europe or Sweden (I can't remember which one).  He also told me that I could have just about any part I could imagine for a VW there in Sweden.  Just like he has been calling on me for parts for his '33 Ford (parts are seriously scarce in Europe), I could do the same from him.
