I need an affordable mechanic... - air cooled

« on: June 08, 2004, 01:08:50 PM »
Okay, I'm getting frustrated  trying to get my bug running so I've decided to buy a tow bar and tow it to a mechanic. Can anyone recommend an air-cooled mechanic who does good work and who won't gouge my wallet?

Try Lockhart's downtown near Mountain View Ford.  They're one of the few places that still knows which decklid to open to find the engine!

Charelton, you cant ask for a better offer than that, and from one of the best. I learned years ago if David (and I still cant get used to calling him that  :D ) cant fix it, it cant be fixed.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger Fielding about calling Mr. Johnston, David. Ha! But if that's what he wants then that's what he'll get.

(It's still hard to get used too) :D

David,
I have replaced the coil and carburetor, installed new points, rotor, condenser. I discovered that I had the distributor in backwards so I fixed that and readjusted the valves. Up until I turned the distributor around it at least ran though it was rough. Since the distributor all it does is turn over but it won't start. I'd be glad to tow it to you for a look see.

Hi Guy ,   It might be easier to come to you rather than doing the tow bar thing unless you live in Texas. I don`t think you have a major problem. Most likely its looking you right in the face , but you have been looking at it to long. When do want to do this thing?  I`m retired and I can get away most of the time if I have some kind of warning. Address or directions ?

I'd be glad for you to come up and take a look at it. I live on Sand Mountain though and for most people that is a far piece to go for anything. If you're game I'm available on the weekends and also after 1 pm on Friday (the 11th). My work schedule is kind of screwy at the moment but I think I'll be off several afternoons next week too. If Sand Mtn. is too far I'd still be happy to tow it to wherever you are as soon as I get a tow bar. Let me know and I'll send you the directions. :)
And thanks! :)

Charlton, Uh, I think you need to bring the " Varmit " to me just in case we need to go get some part or somthing. You need a tow bar anyway.Hows that for an excuse Ha! But,I`ll will get you back the road without to much hassle I think. When you get ready let me know and I will send directions. I hope this is OK with you. Weekends , during the week, Its all OK with me . Just give me a "heads up" when.
   Thanks

Hey, Glad to help you out. Don`t toss that timing light just yet. I got to thinking about it. Having two timing lights giving us the same strange readings seems kind of odd. I`m going to check my light on another Bug just to be sure. I`ll get back with you when know something.  Have fun!!  :D

Hey Big Guy, Checked my timimg light. Its fine. Yours is most likely OK also. Must have been the bright sun or I had a senior moment where I could not find the mark. You need to check this if you haven`t as yet.
