I need a fuel tank & windshield for a 1978 Transporter I

« on: August 17, 2009, 07:00:34 PM »
Just bought a 1978 Tranporter Type II that I'm restoring. I'm having trouble finding a new (pref. plastic) replacement for the fuel tank as the one in it now is totally unsalvage-able. I also need to find a place to get a new front windshield and seals. Any advice?

Also, any suggestions as to a good place to find inexpensive parts?

Good luck on finding cheap parts.  We have a lot of Westys in the club and I feel that some of the members will be posting here to help you out on new and good used stuff and where to find them.

Once in blue moon a bay window bus will show up at Pull-A-Part ( http://www.pullapart.com ) and every now and then, one of them will actually have a good windshield.  I think they are $28.  I got one last year from the Atlanta South yard.  You have to be REALLY careful if you install it yourself.  It's do-able, but it doesn't take a lot of presure to crack 'em.

I can't think of the name of the place, but I think the shop that's next door to the VW dealership on International Drive has installed windshields in some other club member's bay windows at a pretty reasonable price.

I think Pull-A-Part knocks a hole in the gas tank to drain them, so I wouldn't go there shopping for a used gas tank.  I've never seen plastic replacement tanks for buses, but then, I've never really looked for one.  I would think that most of the mail-order places would have a metal one.  Check www.CIP1.com or www.mamotorworks.com

Awesome thanks! That pull-apart place definitely looks like it's worth checking out. As for the gas tanks, I'm not having any luck finding anything that fits a 78. The ones I've found only go up to 71 or so. Someone told me that the reason that those are so easy to find is that they also fit most of the Ghias and Superbeetles. Any idea if one of these older ones might be usuable for a later model Bus?

Fuel tank is different fom bugs / ghias.... I do believe that the one for the later buses is different  like you said.

Name of the glass place is ABRA Auto Body and Glass..

Also, you can check with Clyde's Auto Glass, downtown.

You need a '76-'79 fuel tank to fit without modification. They don't make new ones anymore, so you'll have to salvage one and restore it. The reason you can't use older ones is because you need a place for the return line from the fuel pressure regulator.

The best replacement windshields are PPG. Grant's Auto Glass can probably get one.

Here is a new German OEM quality windshield seal: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=211845121DVW

Is your bus going to be fuel injected?  I have a both tanks at the shop...the carbed tank is in great  shape, don't really know about the injected tank.  The injected tank is still in the 78 bus..the other is not  mounted...your welcome to either.  You can pick em up at the shop.
