Got Keys?

« on: June 06, 2004, 01:36:04 AM »
Thanks to David (Ret.Bugtech) I am now the proud owner of about 5000 pounds of key blanks and 10000 pounds of other locksmithing tools and supplies.  I spent from around 11:30 AM Saturday until 1:00 AM Sunday moving and sorting this stuff and I'm nowhere near done . . . BUT . . . if you need a key for a VW made before they went to the side cut high security keys, I have blanks.  If you need a key for an accessory steering collumn lock on your split window Beetle, I might not have that blank, but I think I have about every other blank ever used on a Volkswagen.  AND, I have the ability to copy them on one of my 5 key machines, or clip them from the code using one of my many Curtis Clippers.  If your key is too worn out to copy but you don't want to remove a lock to get the code, I can measure the key with my VW key guage and set up the Curtis Clipper to punch you out a fresh key.

Anthony . . . I can set you up with a key for double door now.  Anyone else need a key?

PS . . . I got this stuff at a bargin and I'll pass the savings on to any Volks Folks members.

Got Keys?

Zen is just great!! He and Will came by the house yesterday afternoon after getting the equipment he bought and made two keys to fit "Lucille". Her original key was just about beyond being able to be used. Very worn and twisted. I had straightened it out twice. You will not be able to touch his prices anywhere unless you have a relative who owns a locksmith shop.

THANKS ZEN!! :D

I`m very happy that Zen ended up with all this lock stuff as it most likely  would have been dumped. What a shame. I knew Zen would make it home,But I was worried about poor old Homer The Super Bus. It appeared that poor Homer was a tad closer to the ground when I watched him leave. Zen,Did you ever get in 4th gear on the way home ?  I felt like a "Career Day Guidance Counselor" at high school trying to encourage a "young" man to go forth into this world with wonderful visions of a meaningful purpose in life. Zen,I think, wanted to be a locksmith. He ain`t got no excuse now !!

Homer made it home without a problem!  I had to start slow and take it easy on the curves anyway to avoid dumping racks of keys and boxes of tiny lock parts, but once on the straight-aways Homer didn't struggle with the weight at all. The one thing that was a little scary was when I pulled off then interstate at the Cloud Springs Road exit.  I was going over 70 at the top of the ramp and had to stop pretty quick at the bottom because the idiot in front of me stopped instead of moving on into the merge lane like he should have . . . Homer has great breaks empty, but loaded to the gills with brass keys it doesn't stop quite as quickly.

I think I'm gon'na lower Homer.  Even if he doesn't stop quite as good, he seems to handle better sitting 5" closer to the ground.

And you are right David . . . If I ever had the had any desire to be a locksmith, I've got no excuse now!  I'll have to hurry up and finish the locksmith course I'm taking just to figure out what 75% of this stuff I just bought is for!

Zen -since you play with the air cooled locks any advice on late model keys ? I am the proud new owner of a 2001 passat variant (black magic v6 5-spd ) unfortunately I only got the "valet" key with the car so guess I will have to go to the dealer to get the key code ? If I purchase blanks can you cut them? New to the board ,I appreciate the work you all put into it -will try to make the next meeting and meet some of you good folks- Andy   8)

Most all of Volkswagens locks used the same basic design priciples up until they went to the High Security keys.  I don't have any way (yet) to cut the '98 and up keys.  Even if I did, I don't have any way to program the transponders in 2000 and later keys.  These use highly specialized equipment to cut and program.  I don't even think the local dealerships can do it.  I'm pretty sure they have to order the keys cut and programed to the correct code.  They are very good locks and have a super high degree of security . . . but when you need a key, get ready to shell out some bucks!

I've been trying to work out a way to cut them using a Dremel tool.  I can buy the non-chip blanks fairly reasonable.  I might someday be able to do the mechanical part of the high security keys . . . but I don't see buying the equipment to program them anywhere in the near future.   :?

67 door handles are a one year only part.  I don't think you'll find any new reproductions and NOS and good used originals are EXPENSIVE.  Keys on the other hand, are cheap.  All I need is the code.  Email me (zenph@alltel.net) and I'll give you the details.

Sorry to be so slow getting back with you on the door handles and keys . . . I've been working on removing roots from the main drain pipe between my house and the city sewer for the past week.  The drain is now running!  Wooo Hooo!  For the most part "little New Orleanes" (formerly known as my basement) is cleaned up and drained.  Life in the middle of the "LaFayette Triangle" is slowly returning to normal.

Can you bring the door handles to our cruise in at the Sonic on Friday evening?

Yep sure can. I'll be there with the goods. Can I pay the membership dues in cash then? Let me know what I'll owe you for the rekeying passenger side and 2 copies plus membership and all.
Thanks,Scott
