Electric Motor

« on: July 28, 2010, 12:34:25 PM »
I saw an ad on craigslist for a 48volt electric motor with a vw beetle flywheel and clutch attached to it. It was made to attach to a bug transaxle. I thought this was kinda different. Has anyone seen or done an electric conversion?

I have seen them in photos. One was called the Voltswagen. From what I have read they were battery killers and not at all practical .

A guy that ASBug and I work with built an electric Beetle a while back.  He had it on the road, but wasn't happy with the setup.  He abandoned the project and moved on to an S-10 . . . said he had more room to work with and more room for batteries.

Casey (ASBug) can probably tell you more about it.

I bought the car that he had this set up in.
It still has the drive for a DC motor in it (batterties and motor were removed.)
If any one wants this car, it is a 1974 "lovebug" Special Ed. and I have the title for it that states it is a Love Bug in the model area in stead of a "beetle".
It can be had for $300.
Email me for more information.

Casey, do you think that's the motor that came out of your electric love bug?

Not unless David has a nom de plume of Stanley...
David had a plate steel adaptor for his motor directly connected to the input shaft of the trannie.
This one can be shifted, David's set up was shift into gear and go, kinda like the autostick...

Some nut over near Ringgold that welded two Vanagons together has it now.  He's talking 'bout putting in a 63 Beetle . . . but I don't know.  That thing is massive!  If you bolt it to a Bug transaxle, I think the front tires will come off the ground!  I guess if you load the front down with batteries it might ballance out.

Casey . . . was your Love Bug 36 volt or 48?  If it was 36 volt and it still has the speed controller in it, I might be REAL interested in it.

I'll find out.
I know he was going to leave the drive in it.
Wanna haul it to the house for me?
