Anyone have a 73 beetle trans?

« on: January 29, 2007, 09:28:42 AM »
So I was supposed to bring this 73 beetle trans up there to trade someone for an autostick trans... well since my 73 trans is still in the beetle it has never come out of (wrecked in the 70's and sat ever since, you try to get those cv bolts out!)... I havent had a chance to get it out...

So does anyone have a spare lying around they want to sell REALLY REALLY cheap? cause I am broke! I could always bring you my 73 trans later too if you need it... or i have a 71/72 trans sitting on my carport he said he would trade for, but then he needs a nosecone...

Let me know... I need to figure something out by thursday

Thanks!

Those CV bolts can be a bear if you don't have the right socket. Snap-On carries the right metric socket for that. Make sure you tap it in all the way or it can strip. Most of the bolt heads get full of grease and debris.
Then again, if you dont need the axles and only need the trans. Sawzall tha axles in two.

I know they're costy but my Snap-on man is five minutes away. You do torture those sockets, and sending them back for warranty can take time.

No problem using the Empi one if you are the occasional tool junkie.  Personally, I've broken a number of those sockets in my earlier days.  On the other hand, in the last four years, I have basically worn out only two of the Snap On sockets (none broken) and that's using them multiple times every week, sometimes a couple of times a day at the dealership.  One good point was made there, (anybody reading this) make sure you tap the socket into the socket head bolt before you attempt to loosen the bolt.  There's stuff built up in there and if you don't get the socket seated good, you'll strip them out.  If that happens, I usually break out the air chisel, cut a groove in the outer edge of the bolt head, then run the bolt counter clockwise by using the air hammer at an angle.
The old saying....... "you get what you pay for"
My personal favorite tools, Hazet, Snap-On, Stahlwille.  In that order.

when i had a shop the snap on guy would come by weekly... i no longer have that luxury and havent killed an empi one yet... Only reason i have the empi ones is cause i always misplace my snapon ones... in fact i bought a new empi one cause i couldnt find my old empi one either... but i located it soon after i got the new one... who woulda thunk it was in the box of parts from when i rebuilt my bus cv axles?
