Aftermarket Switch Keys

I finally found a supplier for the key blanks to fit the aftermaket switches on pre-68 bugs!

These blanks are hard to come by and expesive.  Every now and then one or two come up on eBay and I've seen them go for over $15 a pair.  These cost me a good bit more than most VW blanks, but I went ahead and invested in a box of 50 while I could get them.  I'll have to get $3.00 each for the blanks (plus the cost to cut it) . . . but that's still cheaper than replacing a good switch because you can't get a replacement key.  I should get them sometime late next week.

Is that the kind with the VW logo cut out of it?

No, these are for the new replacement swiches you can buy today.  They appear to be identical to the originals, but they don't use any of the original VW key profiles.  The key profile is original to some Italian boat maker and was also used on a few very rare Europian cars . . . and one line of Mack Trucks in the 80's.  The switches are availble everywhere and come with two keys, but it's next to impossible to find replacement blanks.  I've been searching everywhere for them since June when I found the Ilco number for the blank.

As for key blanks with a cut-out VW logo . . . good luck.  They are becoming increasingling hard to find because VW quit making them and VWoA has stopped everyone else from making them too.  West Coast Metric used to have most of the profiles with the cut-out logos, but I've been told they don't anymore (thanks to VWoA).  You can find them on eBay and from a couple of established VW locksmiths, but they are going to cost you.  Depending on the profile, they typically go for $15-$50 each.  http://www.cpi1.com has a few profiles with the stamped in VW logo for $4.95 - $9.95 each . . . but I don't know for how long.  If I could afford to invest a lot in them, I'd buy 'em out.

If you order before midnight on the 31st you can get a 10% discount on any order by using coupon code HAL31.  The keys and lots of other stuff on their site has free shipping if your order is over $50.
