I sent the guy this:

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/3029831011.html
Hello,
Just so you know that engine will not go into a car in it's present set up...
It's a little more complicated than just swapping over a fan shroud on this one.
The forums around Ga. and Tn. have looked at this thing and determined it'll never "bolt in" a car.
(It was for sale in Chattanooga TN a few months ago... )
The crank is also totally wrong for a car install as well.
This is some type of an industrial engine or perhaps an airplane (ultra-lights of the 1970's) engine.
Bottom line is it isn't a car engine.
Just wanted to give you some heads up.
I'm a VW enthusiast, but I run all the newer stuff (1600's and such) so I have no interest in this engine, just wanted to let you know, so you can update your ad.
...
If he continues to list it as a car engine, I'll flag it.
KC

Hummmm . . . I wonder what kind of ignition system was going to be used on this thing?  Or do you think the block off's for the distributor and fuel pump were just for shipping purposes?  It looks to me that they intended for the distributor block off to stay there.  If it was just for shipping, you would think they would just put a cork or plastic plug in it.

I'm going to try this one more time.  Do you suppose the big thing on the end of the shaft could be a thrust bearing ?  Noticed these things --8 dowel crank, larger valve adjusting screw, Block-Offs appear perm.  Do you suppose this  thing ever was intended to be a gas engine ?    Maybe a compressor ??

----Also the case did not appear to ever have had the cast -in gen.stand or serial #   If it was some kind of aero engine you would think it would have some kind of dry sump oil system. Looks like it would have to have a different type of flywheel to clear the "bushing looking thing" if it ever was intended to have one. I don't think so.

Look at the spark plug inserts or what ever they are in the head, it may have been for a compressor application...

Fuel pump was mounted horizontally on the dist. side of the case.  Most 36hp heads had steel spark plug inserts. To bad 40hp 1200 cc  and the 1600 cc didn't have these inserts. Like I said before, might be a compressor.

Now I wonder if this engine is just some persons "project" and not a company/factory "crate" engine.  Like Nick said  ODD.  I still would like to see it in the "flesh" while its apart.

I just saw the new photos. About the steel plug holes. Do both heads have this type of insert ?  The car engine never used this type of insert as far as I know. I'm with KC on this engine being a compressor. There is no way this engine could run on its own.

The ad is now inactive, maybe a sale is pending? It's neat to watch this thing turn up for sale again and again :)

He would make more money if he sold it piece at a time if he wanted to mess with it.
