I'm looking for some stock front spindels - anyone have any lying around?

My Ghia is currently on dropped spindels but it's too low - the front tyres rub on the arches on tight turns so I'm going to standard.  This means that I'll have the dropped spindels for sale or swap of anyone's interested?

Hey, Im suprised that Jim didn`t have spindles. You can use standard Beetle/Ghia spindles (to be on the safe side) `70 up. Some earlier spindles had smaller tie rods ends. They are not hard to change out. This would be a good time to look at the condition of your ball joints. Did you find anything else serious ?

I'm due to talk to Jim in a few hours - he said he didn't have any lying around but was going to call a few people to try and get hold of some.

There were no serious problems really - cylinder head bolts needed tightening, one of the wheel bearings needed repacking etc.

The main issue is the floorpans - front drivers side has rusted through and the passenger side has been replaced but apparently incorrectly - they've put it on from the underneath rather than from above.

Overall Jim says it's in pretty good shape for restoration potential.

Well , Thats good news. When you get ready for pan repairs, contact Richard Strout at 236-4583 in the evenings. You will not be sorry. He does excellent work.

Thanks, I'll give him a call later.

As for the spindles, I've been told that Jim can get hold of them for $60 a piece.  Does anyone know where I can get them cheaper? Or is this the going rate?!

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt, Jim is usually pretty fair, but you might find them cheaper if you want to take the time to search them out.

I have a 69 bug and I am wanting to lower it.  I have never took the front end all the way down but the car drives and handles great, it is just the dust covers on the ball joints are staring to crack and I am going to have to replace them soon.  So I thought while I was already there why not lower it.  To make a long story short, If you have not already gotten rid of the spindles I would be willing to make a trade with you seeing that nothing is wrong with either set (mine or yours).  Just let me know.

I'm interested in a trade!

I don't think there's anything wrong with the dropped spindles I have - I don't know why the tyres rub on the arches - maybe somethnig else to do with the wheels I've got or the suspension setup, I just don't know.

Are you looking at doing the work yourself or would you be getting a garage to do it?

I do not think there is naything wrong with mine either.  The car tracts straight and is pretty tight considering the age.  As far as doing the job myself I am not for sure if I would do it or not.  It all depends on how much free time I have on my hands.  I may try to swing by cherokee alignment in the next few days and have them take a look at everything so I would know how all the other components under there are holding up.  Do you have a shop in mind or one that you use?

That would be fine with me.  Just give me a call this afternoon or tomorrow.  My number is 842-6898 and anytime today after seven is fine up until around eleven (gota have my taxes done at five), or all day tomorrow.
