Looking for my first VW: a bay window Camper

« on: August 17, 2009, 09:03:21 PM »
I am looking to take the plunge... I live in Dayton, Tn and am on the lookout for my first VW.  I would like to find a bay window camper that is in great shape for actually camping in it, working on it, and cruising around town in style.  Right now I do not have the time or facility to undertake a full restoration -maybe down the line sometime, but I am willing to pay for a camper that is in great shape.  For the last few weeks I have been watching Craig's list, ebay and TheSamba.com for VW's in the area.  Nothing yet.  Meanwhile I have been reading every bit if info that I can and thinking over the whole thing.  I have come to you guys for some insight and advice.  I am not in a hurry and will wait for the right VW, but I need help finding it!

The best advice I could give you would be to try to buy local if you can and contact someone on this site to go with you to check it out. There is a lot of "Junk" for high dollar out there and they don't mind taking your money. Go easy. Trust me on this.

One of our members has a late bay camper for sale. It's in great shape, and it's the right color. More info: http://www.volksfolks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4970

Hey Java, If I was in the market for a camper, this would be the one. Its in great shape. You might question the price but its worth it, considering  some people will pay $2,000 -$3,000 for a "rolling wreck. " and then spend another $5,000 + to barely get on the road much less spending a LOT of time  and gas trying to run down parts. Travis always took excellent care of his VW's and as far as I know its a turn key operation on this Westy. If you are serious you need to go check this one out. :thumbs-up:

What a sweet bus!  I would love to check it out!  But that price puts me down the line a couple of months though.  I do not think that it is unreasonable -and I agree that I could easily blow close to that on a "rolling wreck"!  To get serious with Sweet Pea I am going to need a few months to: A. convince my wife of the merits of your argument and B. save a few thousand more.  In the mean time, I would love to check it out!  If he is looking to get rid of it quick, then I might not be the man -but I do think that by October I could swing it.  Also, I am not going anywhere so I am open to any other leads and advice!
Thanks for your help!

I've know Travis and Sweet Pea since 1998 when the Volks Folks got started.  I can assure you that at the slightest sign of a problem, Travis was right on it, getting it fixed right!  It's been well cared for and well loved ever since I've know it.  If I wasn't already VW poor, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it and head out to anywhere in the country in it tomorrow.   8)

Travis is a bus man all the way. I've never known him to neglect any of his buses. That is a sweat bus and in very good shape. The price in this case will directly reflect the condition of the bus I assure you. I think Travis has been kicken around the idea of selling it for awhile.I doubt he's in any real hurry to let her go.

Thanks for the heads up.  I haven't been able to get in touch with him yet, but I am definately interested.  I have really enjoyed all of your advice/links/discussions/etc here!  Cool community.  Thanks for being willing to help out!  Update:  I am still reading, searching and saving for a bay window camper to adopt.  I am planning on heeding your advice and buying one that is sound - that way I can enjoy it as I learn!  I might ask one of you folks along as things progress.  Right now it will be mid October before I can plunk down the cash for the kind of condition bus that I think woul be right for me.

Contact has been made. The talking has begun. Thanks guys for all the great shout-outs. Sweet Pea has developed some things in the past few months, and they have been discussed in the talking.
