Looking for a Bug

« on: February 19, 2009, 12:40:27 PM »
Hi Guys,

I am looking for a Beetle to fix up. I am interested in anything '61- '74.
I'd like to find one that runs well but needs to be fixed up and as close to Chattanooga as possible.

I have tried Samba and Ebay, but no luck.

PM me if you have any for sale!
Thanks!

I have about 3k to play with. Give or take a hundy.....

Runs well for 3k? Better forget the 61-67 part of that. Seems if you find a bug already in Chattanooga the price is pretty high recently. Your best bet is to go a bit out of town, you'll save some cash by doing so.
I know of several 61-64 for 2-3 k but none are in daily driver condition and none in town already. I was thinking there was a 67 in Harriman for around 4k that was in good runnining order if that helps.

Would I be better off looking for a solid body and putting a rebuilt engine in it?

I plan on the car being my hobby but it needs to serve some double duty getting me to and from the office.

Like Scott said, probably gonna need to increase the offer range if you want a good early model driver.  Seems everybody is wanting big bucks for so-so cars these days.

You can still run across some pretty nice post-67 bugs in your price range, but even those are gettting harder to find.  I've seen a few pretty decent deals on craigslist in past few months.  If you are seaching craigslist, don't just limit yourself to Chattanooga.  Like Scott said, you might want to look out of town.  Most of those decent deals I've seen have been on the Atlanta, Knoxville, and Nashville Craigslist.  I don't know if it's got something to do with all the hipe over the new factory or what, but a lot of air-cooled VWs I've seen for sale in the Chattanooga area lately seem to me to way overpriced.

My 2 cents...save your money buy something thats pretty much finished adn a good daily driver. Then add the little things to make it yours. Your going to end up with 5k-6k in any nice looking pre67 bug. If you pony up and spend it up front you'll have alot less grief and usted knockles in the end.

I know of a  ruby red 64 for around 2k. It has new pans, and is in the process of getting new heater channels. If I remember right it is an original paint car with original motor that runs.. It would need a bit more work to be on the road but not much.(not sure if it needs brake work or tires) You could probably have him finish the heater channels and get it road worthy for 3k. I still say save more money and wait but what do I know.
