Portia needs a new home. After a couple faithful years, I'm wanting to upgrade to a new car (wish I could afford a Toureg - but will likely end up in a Jetta). I'd keep her, but I'm morally opposed to owning more than one vehicle.
The details: Most important: I only own one vehicle at a time. Portia has never let me down. She has tried my patience occasionally, but I've driven her every day both around town and cross-country for two years. I've never been stuck on the side of the road.
She's a 1974 Westfalia Campmobile hardtop. I removed the cabinetry because I found it to be more of a hassle than it's worth. The z-bed is still there and I've added a few nice touches (stripped and stained the birch in the headliner and created a wood insulation panel over the engine compartment).
The front seats are fitted with shoulder belts and the passenger seat is a center-row seat from a Vanagon (still looking for the right seat for the driver's side, which is a late-bay style seat).
Decent stereo - plays MP3 CDs and has a remote so you can lay in the back and adjust the tunes. VDO tach and oil temp gauges installed.
The 1.7l Engine is in great shape. It's a late 1.7l - the fan shroud is coded for 1.8l. I found this out the hard way and had to make an extra trip back to the parts store for the right gasket kit. The engine was completely toredown and reassembled with fresh seals last X-mas. She has a Weber Progressive single carb that I rebuilt 1.5 years ago. She pulls strong for a bay and cruises at 75mph on the highway.
She does need new ball-joints - got to be honest there.
Plenty of pictures available on my website (and others):
