A guy I work with has finally given up on finishing his custom Beetle and told me yesterday that he wants $1500 for it. I don't know how long ago he actually started this project, but I first saw this bug about 7 years ago when I was looking for an engine for the very first VW I ever owned . . . it was finished to point it's at now way back then.
Anyway, it's a '74 (I think) standard Beetle. The top has been choped several inches. The neat thing about this chop top is the way he did it. Lot's of cuts, lot's of added metal, hunderds if not THOUSANDS of hours getting it formed exactly right. It doesn't "look" chopped like all the other chopped bugs I've seen. It looks like this is the way it was designed. And it has VENT WINDOWS! That's right, he chopped the door frames, but cut down the vent window frames and re-installed them. It has new Creative Car Craft Fat Fenders on the rear and the stock front fenders have been molded into the body. If I remember correctly the chassis was completely sand blasted, all the rust (if there was any) repaired, and painted. I remember looking at the pan and wishing I had paint job that good on the outside of my bug! After chopping the top he installed a clear glass aftermarket pop-up sunroof, but I think I remember him saying he wished he had installed a factory sun roof instead . . . that might be what caused him to loose interest in it. Once he talked about building a custom front engined V8 chassis and putting the body on it, but other projects kept it on back burner. I guess it's been on the back burner so long he just wants it out of his site.
If your wanting to build a cool custom bug, here's your chance! The only hard part left is having the glass custom cut to fit the new lowered roof line. The chassis is painted and the body is finished and primered . . . just a few hours of light prep-work and it's ready to paint. It's basically just the body shell and rolling chassis but it does come with lots of new West Coast Metrics seals and rubber and a few odds and ends.
His phone # is unlisted. If you're interested, let me know and I'll have him contact you.
PS - a friend of mine who looked at it last night said that he also has his rail buggy for sale. He told me that it would put anything that was at circle 'yer wagens to shame . . . brand new 0 mile engine, interior pannels, exterior body pannels, ect., and all HIGHLY Detailed. He has it priced over a thousand dollars less than what it cost him to build.
