Travis, Pay attention to your buddy Rick.  VW was so proud of those things that they stopped sending them over here.  I never worked on the VR-6 models but I did have my share of 5 clys. Never again !!

What I do know is I remember when VW was a VW and you could repair them without having to get a Gov. Grant  and a degree from M.I.T. and the cooling system main ingredient was free  Thats my thoughts and I'm sticking to them.

My experience with the minibus was a 1993 model that was a 10 or 12 passenger model in belgium, It only had like 50K Kilos on it and one day I pulled up to an intersection and when I went to turn right, the stearing wheel just spun... You could sit there and spin it free all the way around.  Some Yahoo (probably named Franz), hadn't tightened the bolt in the universal at the base of the stearing shaft and all the faces had ground off.  If it would have happended 2 seconds later I would have been a hood emblem for a beemer....
Ah - those were the days...

Was this van built in Belgium ?   I bought a brand new '85 Volvo 740 made in Belgium and this car would just about boil over when using the A/C. You could use the A/C for about 30 min. at a time.  The dealer got the car back many times and they couldn't seem to fix it. I sure as hell didn't know what was wrong with it until about a year later I was standing in front of the car and my wife started the engine to go somewhere and turn on the A/C. and I got a blast of air on my legs. Volvos had a aux. fan in front of the radiator for the A/C and low and behold it was running backwards. It was a per-mag motor and you couldn't turn the leads around. I took it back to the dealer and they said it was impossible for it to do this. I had to show them that the fan was blowing instead of sucking. The car was out of warr. mileage wise but they replaced the aux.fan under warr. The original fan motor was made in Belgium.
