I started this project a while ago and have since had kids and it's been on the back burner for at least two years.

it's 95% complete, but mostly disassembled. (galley removed, and engine disassembled)

the engine needs to be completely rebuilt with new heads, pistons and cylinders (they're a bit pitted from rust, they would probably work ok for minor use but I won't say they don't need to be replaced)

fuel tank needs replaced or coated inside (rusty) fuel pump was junk... I never did get it to run prior to disassembly, so I can't say the FI is ok. I planned on putting a subaru engine in it. Has 138k on the odometer iirc. Previous owner said it was running / driving fine when he parked it (long time ago) due to leaking coolant at cylinder heads.

missing items include pop top top seals, the curtain rod on the passenger side, rear bumper.

needs a general mechanical restoration and the minor galley rust repaired / whatever... gas tank replaced or coated, fuel pump was junk, so it's gone.

needs:
canvas
pop top seals
sky-lite
brake's bled, maybe replaced.
slave? clutch petal does not move
tires
engine
windshield cracked across-ways
front direction indicator housings (bulb holders corroded iirc)
rear bumper
hook-ups (cracked, some missing pieces)
propane tank cleaned and tested

I just titled it this week so should get it in the mail pretty soon...

for some more $ I also have a set of 17" Mercedes SUV wheels and tires with like new tires (but not load range D as recommended for a full westy)

not really. There are two companies that offer conversion kits. Some say that to make the best conversion, use components from both.

Kennedy engineering is one, Small Car is the other.

One of the more tricky things is the coolant manifold on the top of the engine, it benefits from modification (changing one of the outlet angles) which is offered as a service by someone... I think it's smallcar.

If you shop carefully (ie, pull-a-part for the engine and related parts) you can do the conversion and have a more powerful, more reliable power plant for the same price as rebuilding a wbx. The "standard" subaru engine swap is with an EJ22.

Another alterntive is to use diesel vanagon parts (engine mounts, oil pan, transmission bellhousing, flywheel) and converting to an inline four cylinder such as a CIS rabbit engine (1.8 JH for example) or a fuel injected  2.0 ABA

If one were to actually come out and look at this thing and bring a trailer along, the price is definitely negotiable, so if any of 'yall know anyone looking for a vanagon, spread the word.

I think all Vanagon trannys are different . Someone correct me if I'm here. Was '80 the first U.S. spec. Vanagon ?

I have seen a bus and vanagon tranny sided by side, but it's been a LONG, LONG time . . . if I remember correctly, the bell housings are a little different, the main section with the gearbox and differential are very similar, but the shifter is WAY different.  If I'm remembering correctly, the vanagon shifter is on the side where on the bus it goes straight into the end like a type 1.
