72 beetle

« on: September 06, 2014, 11:52:32 PM »
As usual I have brought something home I'll probably never get round to or finish,  standard beetle pretty rough,  interior is all there,  pans could be patched,  front clip I a little tweaked ,  tow bared it home,  most everything but a motor is there,  brakes actually stopped the car in the yard asking 600 obo,  no title

Not really,  like to get rid of the whole car,  I'd probably get on it faster if it had a title

I read something that made it sound like getting a title on an old car has gotten easier than originally thought. I had looked into a long time ago but never made a move. With the new system it only took like 1 or 2 steps.

This is what I had read on the samba from a dude in Memphis. It sounded pretty straight forward and easy.

Quote
I just wanted to bump this thread with some current info since I just went through the process. I bought a '73 Beetle for $100 with a bill of sale only, and e-v-e-r-y-one I talked to discouraged me from doing that. Even the Tennessee Shelby County Clerk's Office rep on the phone told me I should never buy a car with no title, as it was a big hassle to get a title. She finally told me you can fill out a form called "Certification of Ownership" and use that to get a title. There are two caveats, and this is copied and pasted straight from the form:

"This form is required only if the applicant is seeking title to a vehicle (1) with a fair market value (FMV) of $3,000 or less or a vehicle at least 30 years old [regardless of FMV], and (2) the applicant is not able to provide other proper documentation to obtain a title."

My '73 Beetle is well over 30 years so all I did was fill out the form (in advance) and pay all the fees, which came to about $120; and she gave me a license plate that day and said the title would arrive in the mail in 4-6 weeks.

Boom. That was it. There is no title-getting company involved, no shady methods of getting a garagekeeper's lien or billing yourself for storage until you 'reposses' the car - it's all legal, legitimate, and straightforward in TN (well right now it is) to get a title for the older VWs. You're liable for everything you write on that form so if you assert that there is no other interest in the car, and turns out it's actually stolen or owed on, you can be held legally responsible, including for perjury. There is no expiration for that statute!

Hope this helps get some more of our classics on the road again. I hate seeing great vehicles with no title sold for parts just because nobody seems to want to take the chance of being able to get it legally on the road.

That's easier than what I thought,  I could try that,  my buddy just got the paper work for an old truck and it was still the run an ad in the paper,  get a dealer estimate etc

Yeah, when I looked into it, it was the 5 step process that included: bill of sale (or a certified attempt to contact the previous owner), photos of all 4 sides, dealer appraisal, LEO VIN check and a news paper Legal Notice ad. Once all of that was submitted, then you would be reviewed for approval. I got through almost all of it, but bailed. If it had just been this easy, I'd have done it.

Interested... Sorta.
Haven't needed to build and sell lately so, yeah.
I think I have everything needed to put this on the road.

Need the following:
Shoot me or just post the photos of the interior / pans / channels / etc.
Do you have an engine cover?
Shoot me an inside view of the front "tweaked" clip.

Will it Flat Tow with those tires or are they totally toasted...
If the pans are OK and the Channels are OK I'll seriously look at getting it to the house.

the ghia pan is mine and i just need to arrange to get it from him, so we are still cool on that depending on your time frame, now that the holidays are finished the process may get faster.

i will get some more pictures of the bug, the pans sere decent and i remember the channels being good, all the interior is there, i will also let any stuff i have that the bug is missing go with it, im still planning on cleaning my garage of random vw part, i have a engine lid,
