This is “Shelley”, a 1966 VW Beetle. This is the last year of the old-style headlights, and is considered by many to be the last of the classic Beetles! It comes with a rare and desirable factory sunroof, pop-out rear quarter windows, correct Sapphire III radio, ,correct 1300 engine, correct Continental spare, and parts including a pair of correct front seats (that could use re-covering), a German RF fender, and a nosepiece. The current front seats are from a Fiero, and are so fitting that I haven’t had the heart to remove them. It has been converted to 12V and had a late model IRS transaxle professionally fitted. It has VW shoulder harnesses for the front seat passengers mounted in the stock locations with original German bolts, for safety. The color is a beautiful Bahama Blue.
I have owned this car about a year, and driven several hundred trouble-free miles. It runs and drives well on the highway or in the city. The engine rarely even puts down a drip of oil. It has good compression and the endplay is in spec. I would not fear to drive it anywhere. The electronics have been converted to 12V and everything works, although I have the radio and wipers going through the same voltage reducer and they don’t have enough juice to run at the same time. This would be easily fixed by a separate reducer or by using the Wolfsburg West kit to make the wiper motor 12V, or by putting in a 12V radio. Good transaxle with plenty of life on the clutch, and good tires, with a slow leak in one. The sunroof works well, and has a new seal, as do all the windows and both decklids. The body has been partially restored. It has new floorpan sections and solid floors. The RF fender has been damaged, and I have a German fender to replace it. The nose was also damaged at some point and banged back out. I have a replacement German nose section. These go with the car. The worst spots for rust are at the back of the front inner fenders. This causes the lower hinge on the passenger side to be loose. A couple of small places under the rockers are holed, and could be ‘glassed. Any other rust is just surface rust and all of it has been chemically treated (hence the black color). The rear bumper had the bolts break off on the driver’s side when I tried to remove them. Overall, it’s in sound, driveable mechanical condition, and could use some cosmetic restoration. It could be driven daily as-is, or restored in to a show-stopper! Although I wouldn’t be afraid to drive it away, please remember it is sold as-is. Please help give it a good home!
The bus is “Brown Ale”, a 1979 VW Type II Transporter 7-seater with the rare factory sunroof and Eberspacher BA-4 gas heater, so you can stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter!
Again, please read everything! First let me say I need the engine and transaxle, so it is sold without engine and transaxle (including linkage and shifter). However, it is 99% complete and original otherwise and has some great parts, or could be easily restored if you have a drivetrain laying around! I have driven this bus, (the running gear is currently in it) and it gets around fine. All the electronics and brakes work, so there will be little else to do if you want to just put a drivetrain in and drive it! If you just need the parts, some of the useful parts- a working gas heater (it will need a fuel pump-I had to borrow one of mine) that puts out tons of heat! I removed it so I could remove and clean the gas tank to get it running, but it bolts right back in. An uncracked dash with an 8-track player (works, but makes a droning noise), good middle and rear seats, with near-perfect original covers, all floor mats, good glass (but no back window!), including windshield and those great sliding side windows. Tires hold air and have tread, door panels, dash panel, padded steering wheel, etc. etc. Do the math on the value of these parts, and consider that you get the original box they came in! If you might like to drive and restore it, you could do so as-is, or for a real show stopper, it could use some body work and rust repair. It has many rust “freckles” over the body, and a few small holes in the floorboards and wheel wells. Note that the two large holes by the sliding door are for the long second-row seat. I have opened and closed the sunroof a couple of times, and it could use maybe some new cables or the plastic guides. Please ask any questions if I left anything out, because it is sold as-is!
