1989 Volkswagen Cabriolet - Sharp Car For Sale

« on: December 23, 2002, 03:49:32 PM »
I was recently contacted and sent a picture of a 1989 Volkswagen Cabriolet, black on black, 5 speed, 4 cylinder and the vehicle only has 65k miles.   Priced at $1500 and that is a steal. If it weren't Christmas, I would NOT be posting this on the board. If the car is half as good as it looks in the picture, it would be in my driveway.  Heat and air work.   Call Steve at (706) 657-7219.

Hi all,

I went and looked at this car this weekend, It is definately a project car. Needs alot of TLC and the whole steering and front suspension redone. The motor is very strong and didnt smoke. The Shift linkage is wore out and it has had a tranny and 2 axels replaced. Right now its hard to get into reverse and when it is there it wants to come out. The Top is in great shape although the front seal leaks and when I looked at it the Passenger floorboard was Ice. If I already didnt have my truck ( That needs attention ) and the Bug. I would have had this car trailered home ( This was the first car ive ever driven that scared me enough to think " No way im going on the Hiway with this.) This car is Definately salvagable. attached is a pic.

Was the mileage he gave (65K) correct?  With it needing that much work, it doesn't sound like it.

As I said, I didn't see the car except the pic that was sent, and was going on what was told.

Herb I can honestly say that I dont believe that car has 65k on it. It still would be worth fixing up. And I still think its a bargain for what it is. But I have to complete some projects before I can bring another one home :)

In the past couple of years I've stopped and looked at 3 mid to late 80s Cabrios, and all three had 60-70 something thousand miles on the odometer.  I didn't talk to anyone about any of them, just saw them for sale and stopped.  The odometers on the ones I looked at would register up to 999,999 miles, and still showed a 0 in the 100,000s place . . . all three also appeared to have well over the milage that was showing.  This one sounds like it fits the same profile.

I would bet that the odometers on these things typically break between 60 and 80 thousand miles, and that if I had checked the odometers on the ones I've looked at were no longer racking up miles.  Did this one work?

I never got a chance to look at the odometer while I was driving I was to busy trying to find the gears and stay straight on the road.
