“Sweetpea” + Extras

1979 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper
New production Bus Depot Side Tent Brown/Beige w/ additional changing room.
w/ Matching Custom ’72 Super Beetle Trailer

All well maintained.

4-speed, fuel injected 2.0 w/ non-hydraulic lifters.  Front disk brakes, drum rear.  Unknown mileage (reads 65,520), but runs great.  Recently serviced (valve adjustment, oil, tune-up).  Hankook RA08 tires w/low miles.  Original paint.

This is a turn-key VW camper that is ready to go on your next great adventure.  Clean title.

Many repairs/upgrades!
Heavy-duty clutch w/low miles.
Shift busing replacement.
New windshield rubber and rot repair.
Fuel line replacement with German Supply fuel line kit.
H4 headlight conversion
Rebuilt Air Flow Meter
Genuine replacement German-made Westfalia OEM tent canvas with 3 windows.
Refinished Fiberglass camper-lid with gell-coat/boat decking paint.
Driver/passenger seat padding/cushion replaced with OEM material.
Koni Shocks
Optima Red-Top sealed battery
Kenwood BT901 Stereo (has the reverse camera ability, but I never bought the camera)
2 Rockford Fosgate 3-way speakers.
CB antenna.

Camper features:
Child Cot
Water tank w/working sink pump.
Table top
Camping stool.

Trailer has:
New tires w/low miles.
Carpeted interior.
Roof rack.

Known issues:
Needs windshield wiper-motor rebuild/replacement.
Turn-signal “off” trigger doesn’t work, so you have to manually turn your signal off after a turn.
Has one good heat-exchanger and one that will eventually need replacement.
Original paint has some pinhole rust that will eventually need attention.
Leaks a little oil.

This is a great bus and probably the best vehicle I have ever owned.  It has been a good run.  I have found her to be faithful and reliable and have never hesitated to take her on the road.  People will literally cheer as you drive by.  They will whip out their phones as you cruse through the campground.  And best of all, you will make everyone smile, yourself included.

$10,500 takes it all.

If you are interested, give me a shout at 423 285 4213.

Way less than I thought Sweetpea would be worth! I may have to rethink how much mine is insured for, unless you were just looking for a quick sell.

So I just got an email from the guy who bought it. He had driven down Saturday from Johnson City and test drove it, etc, and then hooked it to his super-duty truck, threw it in neutral and towed it back.  He just emailed me to tell me that he fired up the bus after it had been sitting in his driveway and it smokes and leaks oil like crazy and will need an engine rebuild.  Everything he is describing was nothing that had happened here.  Sweetpea was my baby and I never hesitated to have here serviced properly!!!  I would never try to hide something like that!  And the guy drove it and looked under and around it and did not see anything like what he is now saying.  What a disaster.  I was already broken up about selling her, but dang.  I feel much worse now!  The only thing that I could think of is that when I put a little gas in for the test drive, I sloshed some oil missing the filler neck (it is hard to hold a gallon oil jug sideways in that compartment and I was in a hurry).  To me that might explain the smoke.  But what the heck!  Could something have happened when he was dragging the bus home?  He used a tow bar for busses and disconnected the battery.  Of course there was no oil on the ground when we were doing all of that after a several mile test-drive.

I would guess he didn't get it in neutral. I can't imagine how else an engine could go from just fine to ruined after 175 miles of not running... If it got in any gear other than 4th, it would have been hella spinning and he wouldn't notice the compression with a super duty... Was he accusing you of lying or just letting you know?

I asked my old man to pick up Bonnie from Knoxville when I was coming back from college. He was passing through and I gave him a set of keys and instructions on how to tow it. He made it across Knoxville and someone flagged him down. Apparently there was light smoke coming out of tailpipes because he had left it in gear... Didn't do much permanent damage. I ended up rebuilding not long after that, but it still ran. Of course it wasn't but maybe 10 miles, not 100+

Isn't this your trailer? Looks like it's already found its way onto The Samba.

looks like he said it wasn't running when he bought it. Then he found a bad connector.

Looks like he is getting his Hazing for not using OEM parts on the Samba... LOL.
He didn't mention the oil leak that the OP posted he tried to hose him with.
Hummmm.

I wasn't going to write anything on here, but some people have their nose where it doesn't belong and love drama-

SO- For those of you curious-everything is all set with Chris and I. I bought his Bus. Yes, when I got it back, it had issues that I was unaware about, but Chris and I are friends and there is no problem- No I didn't haul it in gear, it was in nuetral when I left and neutral when I got in the driveway. I've hauled these VW's ALOT. I know when something is in gear. Not only, but there would be no way I could coast down hills and get 17mpg on the way home hauling a 2-ton van.

I brought the van it in to get repaired last week. I got it back from the shop recentley. I had to do some work to it- some of which included a new thermostat, etc and it's running like a charm. (you can't buy a new thermostat, so had to order a good used for for $150- because this one...was cracked in two and the mechanic said he never seen anything like it.

The 1978-- is a completely different bus (If you would have payed attention, did you not see it said '78 in the title?!) with a completely different set of issues. My friend keeps it at my place, because I have the room. It's a project bus.  ::)

Oh, and yes- I am selling the trailer. It's too heavy IMO after I tried it out- to haul behind the bus. I don't want to risk overheat it by hauling it, so I am just not comfortable hauling it. If anyone else has any questions, or hell, wants my social security number or anything else, that they feel the ought to know, then hell- just PM me.

vw addict - I'm not sure why you feel like people are sticking their nose where it doesn't belong. Before Chris bought it, Sweetpea was owned by another member of our club, so we obviously have a long history with it. We were simply trying to get to the bottom of what happened - how it could have gone from a well-loved, maintained Westy to the engine smoking and leaking to the point where it needs a rebuild after you towed it home. Other than the thermostat, what did you find after taking it to the mechanic?
