1978 Bus For Sale

« on: June 28, 2010, 02:53:28 PM »
I am selling My 1978 Volkswagen Bus.  It is NOT a camper bus.  It is a great bus, I hate to sell it but I have sadly came to realization that my husband will probably never have time to help me restore it. So, I'd rather sell it to a good home.
It runs and drives just fine.
It has a 4 foot crank sunroof,  manual transmission. I believe this bus was called the “Champaign Edition”. Mechanically it is great shape.  It does have surface rust (no rust holes). Most of the surface rust is on the roof. The gentleman that owned it before me pretty much went through everything mechanically. I have all the receipts of what he had done to it. It even comes with all the original VW manuals from when it was bought new in South Carolina. I don’t think this bus has had many owners, maybe 3 or 4 including me. Asking $3900 firm. It's located in Lenoir city(Loudon County)-zip code 37771. If you are interested call shoot me an email  thebrownfamilyemail@yahoo.com Thanks!

My only question is why would you want to "restore" it?  It looks to be pretty much all original and in very presentable shape for an unrestored 32 year old bus.  If it were mine, I'd try to preserve it, but it would have to get a LOT worse before I would even think about a restoration.  If I wasn't already car poor, I'd be VERY interested.  If it stays on the market very long, I might be very interested anyway.  I need to get busy cleaning out some of this junk I'm never gonn'a do anything with and make room for something like that . . .  8)

What's the condition of the engine? Is it still fuel injected?

Well, its in pretty good shape. It just needs cosmetic things, paint being the main one.  The rest are nit-picky things that it needs. Like it needs a new headliner, the old one is there but it had a small hole and one day while I was driving with the sunroof back the wind caught it and make it even bigger. I guess I said it needed restored so someone wasnt expecting a "show" bus. And the engine is in good shape and it is a fuel injected engine.  I have a list and documentation of all the things the gentleman did to it mechanically before he sold it to me.  He said he enjoyed the mechanical aspects of vw's, not the cosmetic stuff.

I would have to agree with Zen.  I wouldn't touch it.  A Champagne edition bus, with all the correct color keyed components, original paint, striping, and all the little stuff, like the kick panels under the rear seats that ALWAYS are missing.... that's a very nice bus just as it sits.  Unless the paint work is flawless, you might actually bring the value down from what it's worth now.  I'd leave it alone, and drive it as is for sure.

From the photos, the OG paint looks like it's in great condition. You don't see many CE buses that complete and original. Does the AC still work?

It has a 2/50 air conditioner in it........you roll down 2 windows while going 50 mph.... ;)   sorry, corney joke.  No, the air doesnt work in it.  I assume it doesnt anyway. I know the heater is not working right now, my husband says it needs a new heat exchanger?

Yeah, I think I'd get the top painted because of the roof and maybe re-chrome the bumpers and restore the striping, but that's one to try to keep original, especially with all the hard-to-find parts! Take it to Thermo-King on 23rd with the ICE type IV compressor kit and they'll make the air cold.
