I saw one with a sliding canvas ragtop in a salvage yard in Florida once.  I thought surely someone had installed an aftermarket unit in it, but I later learned that the factory really made ragtops!  It was probably something they did just  a cover for the cars that came down the line with holes in the roof!

I ran out of gas once and a guy in Yugo gave me a ride.  I had to climb in the driver's door because he had the passenger door duct taped on.  It was only a half mile to the nearest gas station.  He offered to wait and give me a ride back . . . I told him thanks, but no thanks. I had to call someone to bring me a gas can and they could take me back.  He left, I went in and bought a gas can and walked back.  That's the only time I've riden in a Yugo!

I used to work with a guy who was obsessive about routine maintenance.  He bought a Yugo from a co-worker, same place, and the odometer had quit at the nearly 300k mile mark.  It was the nicest one i had ever seen, had shiny blue paint, tinted windows, and A/C that would run you out of the car it was so cold.  Ran and drove amazingly well (for what it was)

All the others i have known were crap.   :)

A guy I used to work with bought one new and drove it every day for over 10 years.  We used to kid him that he doubled the value in it when he filled up.  He would grin and keep going.  He finally traded it in because it got to where he was having to get parts fabricated when stuff did wear out because no one had new parts avalible and they we getting pretty rare in the junk yards.  The last time I saw him driving it, it looked and ran about like it did when it was new.  So, I guess the old saying "even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then" is true.

Another guy I work with said he thought he would make some money when Yugo went under.  He bought 3 at an auction in Atlanta for less than half the sticker price.  He said one of them made it home on it's own power and he made a pretty good profit on it . . . but he lost his butt getting the other two home and replacing the head gaskets so he could try to get some of his money back out of them.

Was it you, David that said something about leaving one along Lee Hwy when it died with the title in the seat?  Could've sworn that was you?

Funny stuff.  Some were junk that wouldn't make it off the delivery truck.  Others would go a half million miles....  :D

I owned a Suzuki Samurai.  They were a similar story.  But I wish I still had mine.  Amanda makes fun of me for having owned one, but I LOVED that little thing.  I did look kinda funny getting in and out of it, though.

Yeah there's not $2200 worth of bus there either. Keep searching :)

What are you looking for Eike and what are you wanting to spend?

I was the service manager at Village VW when Nelson bought Southland. Nelson took on the Yugo . I can tell you some really terrible stories  about my dealings with Yugo's. One of my favorite stories is about a Yugo that came off the carrier with no dip stick and no place on the block to even put one in. Yugo forgot to drill a hole. We had 1 customer that tried to get off the lot with 3 different Yugo's . The first one locked a engine and the 2nd one lost first gear . Car #3 got to Moore Rd and locked the tranny up . I could go on and on. The last time I saw a new Yugo was at a junk yard on Hooker Rd. The yard had about 25 brand new cars parked in a row. Most of the cars had less than 10 miles showing on the speedo's .

The market is so up and down right now, it's not funny.  Main thing about a rusty bay is the amount of cash it is gonna require to make it right.  Running and driving is a plus, but the mechanicals are the easy cheap part.  Mr Hixson's engine makes that one worth something, even if you want to just pull the drivetrain, and find a good body.  Split busses are far easier to do rust repair on.  Of course, they cost a good bit more to buy in the first place.   ;)

Ed Zachary.

Plus, they're just plain cool.  That's why there's one in my driveway.   ;D

Yep.  Throw a roof rack on bay and strap on a couple of surf boards and you're cool . . . until you pull up beside a split, even without the surfboards.   ;D
