1966 Beetle Sedan For Sale Or Trade

« on: March 22, 2006, 02:57:36 PM »
I have a 1966 Beetle for sale. This car is VERY tight & solid and is a daily driver. I have receipts where the previous owner spent over $18,500 on this car since 1999. I am asking $4000 cash or will consider trades for a 1998-up full size pickup truck, or a daily driver classic car other than a VW. Would also consider trades for motor home. I am located in Tunnel Hill, Georgia and the car is sold as-is, where-is with a clear Georgia Title.

I will be posting LOTS of pictures to
http://www.wizsite.com
by tomorrow , 3-23-06 so please check them out.

The Good
1600 Engine Rebuilt in 2000 (50,000 miles ago) with German Parts
Transmission Rebuilt in 2000 with German Parts
New Brakes
New Clutch, P. plate, T O Bearing
New Front Tires - All wheels balanced & rotated
New Windshield
Floor Pans are in great condition
Original Seats - No tears or rips but does have 40 years of dirt build up
Runs Great - No Smoke - Oil has checked full everytime
Drives great (driven from LA to Atlanta last year by previous owner)
All lights work except flashers

The Not So Bad
Flashers do not work (fuse?)
Radio does not work
Left rear fender has good sized dent
Rear deck lid has small dents
One of the rear tires has a "Bump" I assume it is a broken belt
E-brake is not working

The Bad
I have to sell this car!

Thanks,
Glenn

Thanks for the post. I have sent you an e-mail.

UPDATE: Today I replaced both rear tires with 2 month old used ones thinking the old ones had a belt broken. I was trying to get rid of the "bump" mentioned in the ad. Well the new tires helped but I did find that the right rear wheel is warped and will need to be replaced. Alvin Vaught in Dalton has them for $20 each.

Well no deal so this bug is up for grabs. Ole blue didnt think he could get his money out of the truck.Funny I turned down an offer for $4500 before.

Here's the skinny on the bug. Drives nice and I mean nice would make a great daily driver. It's real quite and pulls hard, tuned up pretty good. The thing stops on a dime.Real smooth runnig 1600 in it.The bad is the obvious the color I swear if it were a solid color or some other vw color I would have bought it cash.Green on blue looks weird..The resto job wasn't what I expected,I didn't look at all the receipts but the previous owner could have spent 18500 more wisely and come out alot better. For those type of receipts you expect darn near show car.For $20,000 there are shops that turn junkyard bugs back to year one condition. Don't get me wrong it is a NICE little bug,it's just like so many others lacking the details a hundred footer if you will. A few grand would save this little fella and could put it ready for show.I expected a full resto that had  a few years of wear not one that needs a full resto.

Anyway this is just my opinion. Glenn is a helluva nice guy and was straight and HONEST on his deal. The receipt prices just lead you to believe something different not him.

Bottom line: Repaint it and pay attention to details ,Rework the interior ,and add a fender and you got a nice bug. Someone will probably pick it up,prices are high these days.

I'm not ragging on this bug it is a good little bug, these are just my observations. I'm sure everyones opinion would vary.

Scott,

Thanks for the honest feedback.

I have not looked over each of the receipts to find out exactly where the previous owner's money was spent but I checked out the high dollar ones like engine & transmission rebuild. All receipts are from genuine VW repair shops from Los Angeles to Alaska to North Carolina. I did not find a single one from a "general" repair shop except for the Maaco paint receipt.
The receipts do include general maintance like valve adjustments, oil changes, battery replacement etc.. It would take a full day to go over each receipt in detail.

I'm not sure that the previous owner ever really tried a full "resto" on the car, instead I think she replaced items as needed like the carpet etc.. We all know from fooling with these little cars that if you don't do the work yourself the cost can add up quick.

I think I represented the car correctly. It is stated the car is a daily driver and everything in the ad is true to the best of my knowledge. I tried to list the negitive things as well as positive and I think you would agree that the list is pretty accurate.

I agree with you on the paint job, the color combination of Bahama Blue & puke green would not have been my first choice! I guess the "hippie" side of the previous owner is reflected here. Who knows what she was thinking?

Thanks again for taking time to give the old gal the once over. I wish we could have struck a deal.

Just to clarify The bug is nice and wouldn't take much to be top notch.I can't place enough emphisis on how well the and smooth the car drives. And again the seller is a good honest guy absolutly nothing shady about him.I also agree when your not turning the wrench yourself the charges get high pretty darn Quick. Nice meeting you, good luck on finding it a good home.

And just in case you don't understand why the $$$ rack up quick, this pretty much explains it:

Bob Hoover's "Tulz" (tools) series was posted on the RAMVA (Rec - Autos - Makers - Volkswagen - Air Cooled) newsgroup in 2000.  You can search the internet for them, or just look at the sticky note at the top of our Tech Tips forum.  I've got links to all of the "Tulz" post listed there.
