That would be fun. Everybody could jump in with a "bit"    I wouldn't last very long because I have forgotten a lot .   Most of my "Tidbits" come from the power train and running gear segments do to spending most of my dealership career in what they called the "Unit Room"(engine/tranny repair) .  I'm reminded once in a while when someone brings up something.
I'm going let VWGirl burn up a few more cells and then let the Kudzu out of the bag(to use your phase)  I have a feeling she might find out. Lets hide and watch 8)

Way To Go !!!!!!!!    Thats what it is . You get the cookie !!
The year?  How about 1961.  What a Turkey !!!  The big difference was it had No torque converter.  It was a Tunnel case 4 speed tranny with a fly weighted centrifical clutch which screwed up all the time. We had 2 of these critters here in Chattanooga and I had the dis-pleasure of replacing the clutch on one of these "Things"  It was listed as a option in the U.S. and our two were ordered for two one-legged Guys here in town. One managed to Rattle and grind along until the Type- 3 fully-auto came to town. The used car dept. converted it to a manuel. I don't know happen to the other one.
I have a original shop work/parts manual that shows you all you want to know about it.
I may be wrong here, but I think the tranny could have been designed by our good friends at Sachs.
      Good job Girl !! :thumbs-up:  \:D/  =D>

In 1945 the 4 speed trans had no synchro rings, so you had to learn how to double clutch without grinding from 1st to 2nd.
In 1952 the Deluxe Beetles received a new synchromesh "A" trans. Standard beetles still had the old crash boxes.
In 1961 a new trans came out called the "AB" fully synchronized "tunnel case" Trans which was a 1 pc. instead of a 2 pc case.In 1964 they put a new 3rd gear ir that allowed you more length.

Joe,The 61 tunnel you are refering to was a 4 speed manuel. I don't remember the codes.

VW Girl , The Sax-O-Mat and the 68 Autostick were both considered Semi-Automatics.  Both trannys worked about the same other than the converter . The cen.clutch worked like a Moped. Rev the engine ,the weight moved out on the pressure plate and engaged the disc to the flywheel. You could not keep the dang thing ajusted if you took off in top gear all the time. We got shop notices all the time telling the owners of the '68 auto-stick to use all forward gears at all times . They were burning up torque converters/seals and even about boiling the ATF due to the heat from trying to scale the Mtns around here in top gear or even starting off from a stop light in top gear all the time. This method also killed some engines from lugging all the time. Flat-Landers didn't have this to deal with as much.
I will bring the shop manual to the show and you can take a peek.

VW Girl,  Shoe size is not a problem and you still get the cookie. Old VW techs are kindred spirits even if they have never met.  Its a very special thing you wouldn't understand. You haven't been around long enough

Maybe, but I think you will tell me soon enough. Are you trying to play the  "Mysterious Stranger" bit with me?
After working all those years for VW and having my own VW shop and dealing with the public, I developed this talent where I could talk to a person face to face for about 5 min. and figure out if this person was for real or just another "Possum" off the street.

Challenge #2---  This was disscussed in every VW publication years ago and (Hint) was a thorn in VWs butt.
What was the "Campaigner Engine" ( Dealership Name) , Why was it called this ?  What vehicle and year was it used?.  What was unusal about this engine ?   HP ?  What was VW-AG factory name for this engine ?  How long was this engine in production ?  This should be easy for some.
Fire up those Brain Cells!
