O' I know some of you Vintage VW Techs may know this already. So you Guys keep your mouths shut.
When was the first auto-stick used by VW ( not Mopar now) ?

hmmm i thought 74 vwas the only year with the park position... thanks for the info :)

i know there are at minimum 6 versions of the autosick trans... and they only made them 68-74...  the problem i ran in to with my 71 was finding the same trans to put in it or one that was in good shape to work.... my 74 burned and that took one more beautiful autostick out of the world

VWGirl, Don't quote me on years that the Auto-Stick had a Park. I have slept a few times since then, but It seems that I had a customer with a early "73 Super with a "park".
I have replaced a lot of burned out Auto-Sticks and don't recall having a big problem with mixing years other than the ones with "park". Hmmm I'm going to have to think about that one. I can be corrected. After 40+ years in the trenches I know a lot, BUT I DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING and I don't belive anyone does. If he/she says he does, He/she is Lying. Do you suppose that why they printed manuels/books ?
Could Be !  I learn new things about our "Little Critters" everyday and it would suprise you where a lot of the info comes from. Mostly Younguns

VWGirl,  Back to the books !    1968 was NOT the first Auto-Stick in the U.S. or Europe for that matter.

ummm... all documentation on the autostick I have ever read began with the 68 model year (so yes they would have been here in 67)...

now there was another name they had for the semi automatics... but i cannot remember what they were called and have never seen one... perhaps it will come to me what they were... but show me where autostick started pre 68? i have never seen one... are you talking prototype? that doesnt count!

The automatic-stickshift was introduced in 1968, In 1973 they were given a park position. In 1976 the Automatics were discontinued after making the last 100 with left over parts.

In 1945 the 4 speed trans had no synchro rings, so you had to learn how to double clutch without grinding from 1st to 2nd.
In 1952 the Deluxe Beetles received a new synchromesh "A" trans. Standard beetles still had the old crash boxes.
In 1961 a new trans came out called the "AB" fully synchronized "tunnel case" Trans which was a 1 pc. instead of a 2 pc case.
In 1964 they put a new 3rd gear ir that allowed you more length.

        Correct on the ,76

WRONG on the first Auto-Stick in '68

I didn't think it would be that difficult. WOW !   I can't belive that someone out there would not know about this little "tidbit" of VW history. :(

The Automatic-Stickshift was officially introduced for the1968 model year hoping to boost sales to those who would want a VW if it came as an Automatic. The 1968 automatic was the first VW with an IRS trans which didn't appear until 1969 on the manual transmissions.

You should have a trivia forum. People would learn a lot of interesting tidbits like:
Who knows what a Crotch Cooler bug is why and what months and years was it produced?
What does Zwitter stand for and what did it mean in VW's?
Things like that.

ok, now if this is a challenge... dont post the answer, i will get it eventually as I know i have talked about them before... i searched google to see where else i have posted about autosticks and if you type "vwgirl autostick" it gets 153 results   i keep wanting to call it a shiftomatic but i know that isnt it... and the letter m keeps coming to mind... i'll get it eventually... but it's technically not an autostick... just a semi automatic.
