'69 Autostick Beetle

I'm not sure I've I'm allowed to post an add right off the bat,if not, feel free to delete it.

I'll be honest,i haven't had this Beetle too long, and while i really don't want to get rid of it,but I'm not sure it's the best idea for my kind of commute right now.So I'm tentatively putting it up for sale.

the information is from the guy i bought it from and from what i can tell it's all correct:

"The engine is a new 1500 single port with around 6000 miles on it. It has a brand new carb, blue coil, 009 dist., chrome pulleys, and has just been converted to an alternator. It also has a Monza style exhaust and the tranny is in excellent shape and has had all its seals replaced. The brakes are new at all four corners and that includes wheel cylinders, adjusters, and pads. The front end is new from spindle to spindle with an adjustable beam. It has 4 new tires. The interior is in great shape also with new carpet, and I just put lowback seats in it. It has euro blade style bumpers and the original roof rack.Paint is in good condition and the pans are original with no rust"

i also have a few manual/books. I'm going to keep a few but you can take you pick from the rest.

the brakes are very touchy right now,but i haven't had any chance to play with them,so it may be as simple as fluid or more complicated,i just haven't had the time to look.

i haven't driven it too much, but i did two days of near non stop solid driving in it from N GA to Atlanta and back, and around towns, and it did fine the whole time.

the OG manual is in the car with all the original Service stamps up to around 45K mark.

this is the first VW I've personally owned but i have been around them my whole life, and it car is lovely. I'm very content that with someone that can fiddle with it and put at most a few hundred in it it would be a top notch car.The only thing it actually needs is the brakes Dialed in.

Tentatively priced at $5000 I'm open to offers, maybe even trades or water cooled VW's

you can reach me here, but Your best bet is at: rustydeville@hotmail.com

Thanks guys.

i also have a special thanks to a mystery member who helped out me and my mother in her beetle on the side of the road years back, what kinda luck is that?,hah.

if it's an autostick, you should get an autostick badge for it  :)

autosticks are really great cars, contrary to popular belief... but I'd only want one 74 & up.

How hard and how much would it cost to change and autostick to a manual?

Please just buy a manual and leave an autostick to those who will appreciate it

it's not like it's difficult... and if you did a search on the internet you could find several hundred articles on how to do it... i could tell you how to do it as i have done it before... but i won't cause i don't think it should be done. the autostick is a dying breed... lots of parts for them are NLA. They are great cars and should be appreciated for what they are. Some people would love to have a beetle or ghia but cannot drive stick... with the autostick they can drive one... I also think (from six years driving an autostick) they are extremely reliable and an enjoyable ride. but that's just my opinion... destroy a dying part of VW history if you'd like. The only reason i converted one of my autosticks is because it needed a new tranny and i couldn't find one... i'd convert it back if i had the correct trans.

I go along with everyone about changing to a manual tranny. If it is working OK leave it alone. It can be done, but it can be a big deal sometimes because of what "stuff" you have to buy and change over. The big suprise is when you get it apart and find that you don't have a clutch cable conduit tube in the tunnel. Fun,fun.  I'm not sure here ,but I think the auto-stick pans came with the tube sometime in middle '70.
I'm like VWGirl the '73-'74 Auto-Sticks were the best. At least they had a Park position on the gear selector. Before that ,you had to have a working parking brake or a brick to put under the wheel. They didn't leak as bad as the older ones.  Keeping them serviced was the secret. The engine could have used about 15 more HP. I drove a modified with the Auto-Stick one time and it was pretty quick.
I hate to think about finding parts/cost for one now. I stopped repairing them because of that reason.
FYI The '68 Type-1 was the first to have Half-shafts(CVjoints) in the U.S. but only on the Auto-Stick.
The big problem with the Auto-Stick was the owner.
