That was fun! I towed Bonnie down and took Matthew and another friend, Dan, with me to the Atlanta Motor Speedway. It was always my understanding that AMS was north of Atlanta...but it was about 30 minutes south of the city- now I know why I was the only one from Chattanooga! We left around 9 am, despite the show actually starting at 8. It took about 3 1/2 hours to get there with all the time we spent sitting in traffic in Atlanta on a Saturday morning. Parts vendors were decent- a lot of new ones that I haven't met before. Same with cars. I take it that it draws from a crowd outside our normal radius. They had a limbo contest to see who has the "lowest" VW in attendance. We ended up going to eat at a nearby mexican restaurant that was found on google (didn't want to stay and eat because of the intense heat). Turns out the mexican restaurant didn't have a/c- bust. Made it back by about 2:45 and saw the awards and the vendors packing up. They lined up for the cruise around the track and we were about 5th or 6th in the second group. I wished I had been further back, because we ended up going kinda slow around the track  and I didn't have room to really drop back and get on it. I left before the be group picture but not before taking a good solo lap around one last time.

Left the show, sat in traffic, went to a buddy's house and rode the MARTA into downtown to see the Braves play. They won in the 10th and then we watched a Run DMC before riding the miserable MARTA back to my truck, hooking up Bonnie and rolling on home. We got in around 4am...

Tons of pics to follow

Effingham was this weekend too, so you can't do both.   :(  I'm glad we did get at least one Volks Folks member to each event . . . William went to Effingham.  I talked to him Thursday evening as he was crossing the KY/IL state line.  I told him to make lots of pictures . . . he said he left his camera sitting on the counter at home.   ::)

Sounds like Nick and crew had a blast!  I've seen the video of the track run already, it's pretty cool to see a bunch of Bugs on a NASCAR track!  And yep, Atlanta International Speedway is WELL SOUTH of Atlanta.  Road Atlanta (where the Formula Vee's race) is north of Atlanta.  WELL NORTH.  Even though there are two tracks with "Atlanta" in their name, Atlanta doesn't have a race track.  The do, however, have several muliti-lane parking lots that you will occasionally catch people racing around.

This one looks familiar...

Oh yeah, it's for sale on The Samba: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1483635

Curiously it seems to have a top hatch over the engine. I didn't think any split windows had that. Was it custom?
