Vees return to Atlanta-plus Barber results

« on: July 10, 2007, 09:50:07 AM »
First, last week at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham. It rained all day Saturday and the Southeast Division Vees mixed it up in the rain with a couple of National Division Vees, 2-time Runoffs winner Stevan Davis and driving instructor for that track, Sherman Engler. I qualified second overall and beat Engler at the start through turn 2. The rain began picking  up and visibility was nearly zero but by lap 2 I was in the clear from the Formula Fords, after badgering one so badly he just waved me around. Unfortunately, my race came to an end a few laps later after spinning in what was either mud thrown on the track by another car or a new washout on the back straight kink. Whatever it was, I had driven the kink the same way I had every time previous. No matter, as the back end came around and I ended in the 'kitty litter'.

Sunday the rain finally stopped and I started from the pole as the National vees went to the back of the field. Only made one mistake which resulted in me getting passed for the lead, so I had to run him down and outbrake him at the hairpin to retake the lead and eventually, the win.

With Sunday's results, the Volkswagen of Chattanooga Vee moves to 3rd in the points with3 races plus the championship race left. A couple more podium finishes and I can go in with a strong shot at the points championship!

The next event is in two weeks at Road Atlanta. Two qualifying sessions on Saturday and a race Sunday afternoon. The SCCA will be running 8 different race groups all day for everything from Formula cars to ex-NASCAR. I've got 4 passes for anyone who wants to come and watch the fun!

Sorry the report's late!

WIN #5 IN ATLANTA on a track that wasn't wet-on the southern half. When we crested the hill, however it was soaked and we were all on slicks! A 3-way battle for the lead for the entire race depending on who could get the power down first exiting turn 7 for the backstraight.

So, I'm 3 points out of first place in the championship points. We're headed to Nashville Superspeedway for the last 2 races of the regular season on Labor Day weekend. And just to make things interesting, the 1st and 3rd place points drivers will be there. Track Passes are availible.
