Oh yeah, I used Castrol 20w50 in my new '83 GTI. 'bout the only thing I don't use it in is my compressor.

The thought of the day:    Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Also, what sizes of tires would you all like to see in a shop?  I'm not looking to make most of my money on tires, but I don't mind keeping a few in stock.  I have seen alot of people asking for 165's since Pepboys stopped stocking them (few VW folks, mostly front runner guy's), is that the most common tire of choice?  Anyone here draggin pans wanna see some Smart car tires?  I'm just trying to get a feel for what is needed around Chattanooga.  I know most of my customers will probably be driving somewhat late model cars BUT I also know finding someone that will even look at a ACVW is getting harder and harder let alone someone that may have a few things laying around that will fit it, and I don't mind keeping a small stock of special "normal" wear items that most of us have to order BEFORE we need them! :D
Thanks for all your responses!
Rick.

I only use the stock OEM German Mann/Mahle filters. Part number OC-28 (Mahle) or W 920/17 (Mann). Those are best for Type IV air-cooled engines.

As far as tires go, Continentals are a good choice since they're a VW OEM tire manufacturer. What would be great is if you stocked the correct bus tires, 185R14 with the reinforced sidewall. Ratwell has a list of tires that fit: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Tires.html A lot of people like the Hankook RA08s too.

I have Yokohamas (Y356) and the tread is still good so I don't think I need new tires for a while, but it would be nice to get them locally for a change rather than special ordering them.

My faves: Tires? Firestone 135,145 front .    165 rear or 185/60 rear.

Continental 145/65(smart car),front.  Lowest pan draggin tire there is that works and doesnt look goofy on a bug.
Continental 165/45 low bus tire You gotta be layin pan for a smart car tire to look right. And as a guy with half a beam left I can say it aint all that great.

175,185,195 in 50,55,60,65 series are popular with low aircooled and water pumpers as well 195/50 seems to be sold alot.

Theres a huge variety of tires for guys that slam bugs and buses. Maybe too many to stock for a small store. But I'm bettin 135,145,165's will keep most happy around town bug and ghia wise.

Maybe sum special orders are an option? I usually know when I want tires well in advance. For some reason I have this camber problem that make me order tires pretty often? Tire rack loves it I'm sure but I'd buy local if the price was about the same.

Cool, that's the kinda info I was looking for.  I have some 145's on the front and 215's out back.  I need some 135's myself!  I have a pair of 195 50 15's that will be there, and 205 60's.  I'll look into the tire brands and sizes and see what I can do.  The same for the type 4 filters.  I have a pair of 15 in. bug wide five wheels that need to go too, they are missing some clips for the hub caps.  Also a starter that is in great shape(I went with a self supporting high torque unit)!!  I'm gonna talk to my neighbor, he had a set of wide five wheels and I think 165 tires that were in like new shape.  If anyone else has stuff they want to sell bring it on, we can get a mini swap meet going!

Swap meet,swap meet,swap meet!!!!
I'll buy smoothie wide 5's if ya got em cheap. Pretty much I'll buy any wide 5 if the price is right.
I'll ask around and see if I can get more specific info for bug tires I know I left some out but theres a ton of em depending on the stance of the car and all.
I was running Continental 145/65 Front and 195/65 rear.Pretty laid out.Handled great tho.

Now running 135 front 185/60 rear. Better with the beam not 1/2 from the road.Much mo betta stance and ride.135's a lil quirky but ok.Might be better when balanced.

I was actually thinking about getting some magnetic signs for the side, what did you have in mind?

Not at first. That is one of the things I'm trying to get my hands on...I will have a alignment machine, just not for a little while.   I'm trying to get this ball rolling without getting a loan, so far it's looking good, but that means I have to hold off on some of the real high dollar stuff like the alignment machine for a little bit.  I do however have a friend with 1 and he has offered his to my customers for a good discount!

Hey Everyone.
Sorry I have not posted sooner.  Friday I got really bad news about the shop/property.  For the last 2 months my wife and I have been working with the owner of the property trying to get a lease hashed out.  He wanted us to sign a residential rental lease....NOT a good Idea for commercial property, then he produced a generic lease with white-out all over it and wanted us to sign that...also NOT a good idea.  So we sat down with him, wrote down all the key points that needed to go on the lease for this particular application and took it to our OWN lawyer and paid to have it drawn up. We agreed to everything before the lease was drawn up so I went ahead and Quit the job I have had for the last 11years so I could get my 401 money in time to get the shop going.  Now we come down to Wednesday..I drop of the completed lease with the owner, expecting no trouble as we had already hashed out all the details.  We here nothing from him until Friday when he has some questions about it.  Before he even has the answers to the questions he totally shoots the deal, changes everything we talked about for the last 2 months and wants nothing to do with anything we setup.  Now we are out $2000 on the paper work, I have no job and we are back to square 1 with a location.  I have a few other locations in mind but they don't have all the equipment that this 1 came with which = more cost to start-up.  To say I'm a little upset would be the understatement of the year, but I am very glad we went through the effort to get a legit. lease because it showed us his true colors!  I can't imagine what it would have been like had we just signed what he had and went right in head first.  Sorry, but I will have to can the AUG. 23 party/opening until I can find another place that fits our needs.
Thanks for all the support, we will get this going, there will be a grand opening, it's just going to take a little longer.
Thanks again.
Rick.
