These are actually on the 10th and 11th.  Both days, practice and qualifying start at 8 and racing starts at noon.  At an SCCA regional, you have six different race groups, with several classes on the track at the same time.  You see everything from ex-Winston Cup race cars to winged Formula cars running 30-minute races.  I'll be racing my Formula Vee both days.  I have a grudge to settle with this track and a certain tire wall!  It is open to spectators, and I can also get three people in with my pass.  The raceway is less than three hours from Chattanooga, so you could see the races and still make it back for the Herbie movie!

Ah, I remember those days when we had our C-4 Zink.
Good Luck and as one old racer once told me :
" Keep it twicks the tire walls"

Awesome!  I didn't know you raced.  Mine is a Zink, also.  A Z-12. :)

I wasn`t the pilot. We maintained and supported the "V". I use to autocross a  Austrival  V  in the A-modified class SCCA.Big engine , Wide 13in tires. This bear was the regional champion for five years in a row. I will have to show you some
pics some time. It was a big bad boy Corvette eater HA!!
  Good Luck and stay safe

Oops, shoulda mentioned that!  The track is on the bypass just NE of Birmingham.  While I'm thinking of it, could someone tell me the exact width between the through bolts on a type 1 tow bar?  I thought of flat-towing the Vee to save weight, but there's tie rod mounts about 1 or 1 1/2 inches inboard of each shock mount on the lower bar.  It would be close!
BTW, did the C-4 look like this one?

Our C-4 looked somthing like the photo, but ours didn`t appear to be quite as areo-slick as the photo. Its hard to tell by the photo. Has this Birmingham track been around awhile ?

Nope, the inagural event was last spring.  The Barber that has the dairy business built it next to his motorcycle museum.  It has done some televised American LeMans sportscar and motorcycle races.  It's a real first-class place.  You can actually stand in certian places and see almost the whole track.

I would love to go with you again if possible, I had a great time watching you and the others fly around Atlanta.  Well, except when you brakes failed and you disappeared for a few minutes, let me check a few things and see if I can go to Birmingham,  I've heard alot of good comments about the racetrack.

Sounds great!  I'll put yall's names on my crew list.  I think you check in at registration and they give you a pass or something.  The website for the place ishttp://www.barbermotorsports.com/ with good photos and info.

Just a quick update from the weekend.  I plan to put more in the newsletter.  Made it there and back for Saturday's race.  The 3rd engine in the Bus in as many months, which I finished installing the Tuesday before we left, did well.  Over 100k miles and better than the "rebuilt" one from April!  The racing was frustrating.  Too many slow drivers in faster-classed cars means getting stuck in the corners behind a car you can't out-drag on the straights.  That was the story of the weekend for me.  Qualified 4th after being stuck behind a Spec Racer Ford, finished 6th after being stuck behind another Ford that hosed me down with gearbox oil and being bounced off the course by an F-5 with a rookie driver.  Had to skip Sunday due to some mechanical issues.

If you've never been to an SCCA race, you need to!  Even if you're not really "into" racing, it's interesting and a lot of fun!  Yesterday, Herb, Richard, and myself drove down to Road Atlanta (which, by the way, is a good ways away from Atlanta) to watch Anthony race his Formula V.  The actual race is today, but we got to watch the qualifying round as well as several other practice and qualifying rounds.  After the qualifying round, Anthony and Misty took us on a tour of the track.  It's a big facility, and the track its self is over 2 miles long with lots of hills and curves.  Once you know your way around, there are some great places to view different parts of the races.  If you like speed, you can sit along the long straight away area.  If you like to see racing where driving skill means more than raw power, there are some great views of the twisting sections of the track.

A couple of pieces of advice if you've never been though . . . if it's the middle of July, be prepaired for the heat.  Between the sun, the humidity, the asphault and hundreds of cars, it's gonn'a be hot!  Take a BIG cooler with LOTS of water.  You probably want to take your own lunch.  A plain hot dog a 16 ounce bottle of water was $5 . . . it's enough to make you really appreciate the concession stand at Bug-A-Paluza.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun.  I hate that we didn't get to see Anthony's real race, but there will be more.  It was hot, for sure, but still a lot of fun.  I made some pictures and Herb shot some video . . . hopefully we'll get some of that on the web site soon.
