NW Ga./SW NC/NE Tn. Trip Jan. 18-20

Someone posted this on the bay window forum on The Samba. I'm definitely planning to attend, it sounds like a lot of fun. Follow the link for more info.

Some of us from the metro Atlanta area want to invite regional bus owners on a road trip in January. Since school is out for the MLK holiday we have a trip planned. This is a family, dog friendly group. There will be some young kids along.

We will leave Cartersville in NW Georgia at 9:00am Saturday January 18th, and head up US Hwy. 411 to Vonore Tn. We will then head south on US Hwy. 129 along the little Tennessee River/Chilhowee Lake to the notorious Dragon's Tail. Then on to the Cheoah Dam ( where the Fugitive Harrison Ford jumped off in the Movie of the same name) then along the Cheoah River to Santeela Lake and on to the Cherohala Skyway with its long views and mile high Blue Ridge Parkway like driving experience.
We plan to camp along the Upper Tellico River Saturday night and linger through the day Sunday and Sunday night. This will be primitive camping, merely a parking space at the river's edge for two nights. There will be a stretch of good graded gravel forest service road involved at the end of Saturday's drive. Anticipated driving time Saturday will be approximately 7 to 8 hours.

Monday morning we will drive out of the forest to Tellico Plains Tn. and south on Tn. Hwy 68 through Copper Hill and on down to Blue Ridge Ga. After a layover in Blue Ridge we will head down Ga. Hwy 515 through Ellijay, Canton and on back to the metro Atlanta area.

This time of year is typically cool in the daytime, 50 degrees or so and temps below freezing at night. Bring your propane and enough fire wood. There will be no opportunity for supplies in the area of the camp, so plan accordingly.

That does sound like fun, and I did take the plunge on new tires. I've got a regular gig now on Sunday mornings, so camping might be out. It would still be a fun day trip, though.
On the Samba thread, he also posted, "We will be glad to keep in touch and meet you anywhere along the way". Wonder if we could meet him at the intersection of 64 and 411, east of Cleveland?

I'm sure he would, I've talked with him via PM and it sounds like he's very accommodating. I'm probably gonna meet him closer to where I live rather than driving down to Cartersville and then back up.

Just in case anyone else is planning on joining this trip, I'm meeting up with them at Hardee's at the Hwy 64/411 junction in Ocoee. He is going to call me once they cross over from GA to TN. They are supposed to leave Cartersville at 9:00 AM.

Great trip! The drive up was absolutely beautiful, I can say I've done the tail of the dragon now (in a bus no less), there was a little snow on the ground as we drove through the Cherohala Skyway, and we even went off-roading a little bit. Finally along the Tellico river we settled on a beautiful spot right by the river and camped for two nights. It was cold, but pleasant. We all had a great time and I'm down for doing this again next year.

Now, on to the pics!

Like it says on his business card: big beard, little dog! Polly and the rest of the canines seemed to have a great time too.

I only had one issue. Before I even left town Saturday, it felt like my brake booster wasn't doing its job. Normally the bus has very good brakes with plenty of stopping power, but now the pedal goes almost to the floor before they grab and I don't feel any vacuum assist. We missed one turn up in the mountains where there was snow on the ground, and I had to stop suddenly. Ended up sliding a little towards an embankment, but I was able to grind down and get it stopped just in time! Now my pads are squealing so they probably need to be changed. I'm gonna tear into the brakes before the next trip for sure.

Where's Wilim?

Wilim would have to get some internets to find out about this one! I really have Nick to thank for giving the heads up, he saw the thread in the bay window forum and I had missed it.

BTW my brakes just needed a good bleeding. I topped off the fluid and we bled each line, lots of air bubbles came out. Now they feel like new again!

Sounds like you may have gotten them hot in the mountains. If brakes heat up, the fluid boils, causing the air to form in the lines (oversimplification...). Once there is air, the pedal becomes spongy and your brakes break. Rebleeding them can fix them, but the point is that something probably caused them to get hot. Maybe it was driving on winding roads. Maybe you have a sticky wheel cylinder, old rubber line or maybe the push rod came out of adjustment. Either way, you should fully expect it to happen again. I need to figure that out...

Trixie does the same thing on the back left wheel. It will get really hot after I drive it for a while and then get in stop and go. It ALWAYS happens going to CYW. The pedal drops and it is scary, but then I do a half second bleed and all is well again.
