The Volks Folks will take a road trip to Lynchburg, TN to tour the Jack Daniels Distillery on Saturday, May 31.  We plan to leave the Ooltewah Bi-Lo at 8:15 am and stop off at the Cone Station in Wildwood to pick up anyone who wants to meet us there at 9:00 am.  Don't forget your FRS radios.

Anyone interested in a stop at the I-24 flea market at the top of Monteagle on the way up???  It's right at the exit. :p

I haven't decided 100% if I am going or not, but if I do a stop at the flea market is always a good idea in my book.

I don't think that we will be able to make it this Saturday :(
You see, we are getting vinyl siding installed on our house.  The crew discovered rotten wood on the front of our house.  The main 2 x 10s that support the house all around the edges are so rotten in the front, you can push your finger through with no effort.  The siding guys (Statewide Siding, who have done an excellent job so far) wouldn't finish the house until the wood was fixed.  To me, that is good.  Some people would just cover it up and laugh.
In order to get to the wood to replace it, we had to demolish my front porch (a 20 x 8ft poured slab of concrete supported by cinderblock).  We rented a Bobcat with a hammer attachment and made quick work of it.  You should see the pile of concrete and busted cinderblock.  Now we have to fix the rotten wood.
I had been wanting to get rid of our front porch for a few years now...looks like I should have done it way back when I wanted to.
So, we will most likely be working on that this weekend.
I will post some pictures tomorrow of the demolished front porch and the water rotted main beams!

If it makes you feel any better Travis, for the last week I've been tearing out and replacing rotten wood on my front porch too . . . and it's 12 X 32 1/2 . . . but then it's also all wood so we didn't have to break out the jack hammers and bobcats.

One thing I discovered while doing this project is that you can tear up old tounge and grove 1X4s a LOT FASTER than you nail down new ones!  I've finished all the framing, got all but the last 1X4 nailed down on the floor (I've got to rip the last one down to 3" to finish it out), and I have 1 of the 4 support columns back up.  The columns were sitting on the floor of the porch before.  Nothing was sealed and it was all untreated pine.  The joist underneath the flooring and the bottom of the columns started to rot and the roof had started sagging.  At one column we raised it back up nearly 4" . . . I guess I should have done this last spring when I first noticed the rot forming.  ???

I really hate to hear of your misfortune with your front sill. Dee and I are still a go. I just adjusted valves, timing, carb and changed oil.

As for going up Hwy 41, not a problem as long as we get on in Jasper or somewhere across the river. Dee refuses to go across the old bridge. She has seriously got a thing about that.

41 takes kind of a detour north for a while until you get to Monteagle, so it may not be worth it.  But, if you get on 41A/BR64 at the top of Monteagle (where the flea market is), then at Winchester take 50 straight to Lynchburg, it's almost a straight shot, and much shorter than staying on the interstate!  It also goes by the lake at Tims Ford State park.  Mmmm...scenic.  If you look close, you can see Tims Ford rusting away in his front yard, next to the washing machine :p

That sounds like a great way to go.  I agree with Dee about the bridge at Nick-a-jack.  It is way to high and too narrow!

you should try crossing that bridge in a big truck, I made that mistake once didn't like it 'cause I was still a rookie driver.  I thought I was going to rip my mirrors off or push the other cars right off the side.

Guys, I guess it's just not in the cards for me to see Jack Daniels Distilery. Dee woke me up this morning about 4 and told me she was going to Erlanger. She had an alergic reaction to something. We were there til almost 11am. We were with you guys in spirit anyway. :(

We're glad Dee is okay.

As far as the trip goes, I am ready to go again.  I'm sure others won't mind going again this summer.  It is a free tour, and you get free lemonade at the end.  Not to mention all the cool stuff you learn along the way.

Well it was another very enjoyable trip to Jack D.  Only a 3 vw caravan but it was a good an eventful one.  2 out of the 3 had problems.  First stop we made was on top of Mt. Eagle no problems just looked around and left. Then from there we went down the Mt on the old hwy toward Winchester and stopped to get something to eat.  When we came out from the restuarant Lamar and Cindy saw a extra unwanted guest in their tire.   A quick plug at the local gas station and we were on our way again.  Got to J.D took the tour (it was better than last year, our guide was funny) looked around Lyn. than headed back.  Next problem, about 4 miles from the South Pitt. exit all the lights on Randy and Kims bus came on at once,  yep you guessed it a belt,  but a small drive to a open Napa and a 10-15 minute fix and we made it back to Chatt town where we ended the day at Amigos.   Had a wonderful time and sorry Herb and Dee couldn't make it again.  Hope Dee feels better and I believe we are going to make this an annual thing so there is always next year. :D
