It wasn't the Indy 500, but...

« on: May 29, 2006, 03:15:38 PM »
I did win a race on Sunday! This was at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC, south of Charlotte (you can't get there from here).

Got the pole on Saturday and led most of the laps despite locking up the right rear a few times, but lost track position when a Vee I was about to lap spun in front of me in the first corner.  I avoided him but the P2 car (Shannon Jones) made it around me. I finished second.

Sunday, I finished rubbing a flat spot in the right rear in qualifying and started second. A pair of new rear tires later, we started and I was leading by the middle of the first lap. I started locking the new tire on the right rear! I had to drive around that, but had enough straight line speed to make up for it. I had about a 2 sec. lead when we came up on the same car from yesterday (should I mention names? all right, Bill Coursey) at Mulligan Corner. "Here we go again", I thought. I was right! I got inside of him and he forced me to the edge of the inside exit like he hadn't seen me. I followed him into the next right where he got the car sideways (again) and I drove it entirely off the left side of the track at the exit to avoid him.  We both straightened out and I followed him through the next right (the 91 deg.). For a third time, I made a run on him into the Last Chance corner and this time made it stick.  Shannon was right behind by this point and followed me through and I watched in my mirror as Bill ran him off drivers right! Either he was trying to catch a draft from me or just wanted to be fair and mess us up equally.

The end result after Shannon straightened himself out was a gap roughly the same as before and that's how we finished.

Changing tires in the pits after impound I nearly burned my fingers on the right rear lug nuts. Turns out the right rear brake was dragging!

Well, I haven't checked it out yet, but my first 2 suspicions are the wheel cylinder or a kink in the brake line, since it just seems to be the one wheel.
