I set up as a vendor and business was REALLY slow . . . I think the weather kept a lot of folks away. It was cloudy and there was a cool misty breeze blowing most of the morning, but never really rained. But it was actually quite nice compaired to last year's "perfect" weather (no clouds, no breeze . . . just a bright sun in a blue sky beaming down on asphalt). Despite not doing as much business as I would have liked to, I had a great time as usual and I'm really looking forward to next year's show.
I talked with a few of the folks from the North Alabama club that hoasted the show. They were thrown a few curve balls first thing . . . the dealer informed them that there had been a change of plans and they wouldn't be able to use the lot next door for spectator parking, some of their volunteer "celebrity" judges didn't show, and their food vendor was also a no-show. They pulled together and pulled the show off successfully despite those set-backs. Having been through some of those same types of problems ourselves, I think that the Volks Folks, more than anyone else there, could appreciate their efforts and teamwork! These folks are true dedicated enthusiast, and have the desire to make this small show one of the best. Look for this show to really take off in the next year or two!
As for the next show, there are what sounds like two great shows coming up later this month. One is at Myrtle Beach and the other is in Montgomery . . . but they are the same weekend as the High Country bus festival.
Several of us are planning on going to High Country, but IF for some reason you can't spend all weekend at a VW event, or your just not into camping, kicking back and hanging out with friends, and just generally having a good time, then I would suggest going to the Montgomery Melt-Down on the 31st. From what I hear it's supposed to be a good one. I think the Myrtle Beach show is a new event, but if the show flops, you ARE at the beach . . .
The Birmingham Bug Blast will be on August 29th at Moody City Park, Moody, AL. This will be the Central Alabama's 4th Bug Blast. The first three have had about 100 VWs and great swap meets, despite the last two being held in a downpour. In fact 2002, part of the interstate in Birmingham was shut down that day due to flooding, but the show went on and it was a great one! I've got first hand information that they have put in their order for dry weather early this time. I've been to all three of the previous Bug Blasts, and I can assure you that rain or shine, this is going to be a great show!
