Made it there and back, bus did great, 646 miles round trip! High Country Bus Festival was awesome and I definitely want to go back. There had to be at least 300 buses there.
I got there around 5:30 PM Friday and the main field was already full of course. But you can drive back a little further into the primitive camping areas and find a spot to pull off and camp. I drove back a ways until I found a spot that had a little bit of a steep hill going down to the river bank, but I navigated it carefully and got my bus positioned in a good spot right along the river! It was cooler back there with plenty of shade and the weather was just perfect all weekend really. Not too hot, not too many bugs.
On foot it was about a ten minute walk to what everyone called "The City", which was the main field where most of the campers were. It was hot down there since they had no tree cover for shade. But there were lots, and I mean LOTS of buses. A lot of folks were set up selling wares especially hippie goods and tie-dye stuff. They were even raffling off a bus, a 1976 sage green Westy almost identical to mine. Tickets were ten dollars and the proceeds went to the Ronald McDonald House, so I felt compelled to buy one. Sadly I did not win. A band played Saturday evening and it seemed like everyone around us including our neighbors played instruments and sang, so there was no shortage of entertainment!
The camp hosts had a staff that would go up and down camp in golf carts selling firewood and ice, or you could hitch a ride back up to "The City" if there was room. Everyone I met was super friendly and nice, it had to be the most laid back campout I've been to all year.
On Sunday I packed up and attempted to launch myself up the hill but there was too much dirt and I got stuck. Our neighbor had a tow strap and a truck, so within minutes he had me hooked up and pulled out. All in all I had a great time and can't wait to go back next year, despite the five hour travel!
Here's all the photos I took:
