I'm out. Due to certain circumstances I will not be able to go. I'm actually used to this by now. It's OK. There will be other shows and get togethers in the future.

I really hate to hear this, Moe. There is still a few days left before we go. Maybe something will change. :(

Got a call from VW Girl today.  She is in Ohio, headed to Missouri before Indiana.  She wanted to know if we had gotten into the trailer for her 3rd place trophy from BP8 yet.  If so, she wants to know if someone could bring it to Effingham this weekend.  Also, she wants to meet up with y'all somewhere.  She doesn't really have access to the internet right now, so post something here and I'll give her a call.

I'm not 100% sure I'm going to get to take off Friday, so I might be leaving out late Friday afternoon instead of with the caravan.  I'll have to wait and see.   I'm still hoping I can leave Friday morning with everyone else, but I might not know for sure until Thursday afternoon.   :?

Anyway . . . If I remember correctly, the plan for the big Volks Folks caravan is to meet up at the Cracker Barrell just off of I-24 in Tiftonia at 8:00 AM Friday morning.  After breakfast, we'll head out on I-24 West . . . I made the trip last year half asleep in the back of a Mitsubishi, running a fever, and generally feeling like c#@p . . . and I came home a different route.  Seems like it took us about 8 or 9 hours (that was stopping several times).  What route is VWGirl taking from Missouri to Effingham?  We left Effingham and went to St. Louis last year . . . I think there is an interstate that runs out of Effingham straight to St. Louis.  Find out what her travel plans are and we'll try to figure out where we can meet.

well i made it to indiana today safe and sound. stole access to the net as well... would be cool to have my trophy :-D

have no idea what route i will be taking... you'd have to ask the bus that one... all i know is that the 600+ mile drive from manassas VA to Indiana was hell and i dont want to do that again. But i have gotten a lot of thumbs up, peace signs, smiles, conversations at rest areas/gas pumps. it's great... i am on about mile 1500 for this trip so far. LOTS of great people at Bug Out. It was a blast!

here is a pic from south of the border :)

What a weekend!  If you missed it, you missed a great time!  The Volks Folks were WELL represented at the show.  Homer the Super Bus made the trip up and back without a problem, I found a lot of super bargins in the swap meet, got to see a lot of old friends and make some new ones  :D  8) . . . The only bad part is I had to come home to go to work tomorrow.   :?

So can I name one thing that made this show worth the trip?  Dr. Mac Jones' WWII VWs on display at the MY Garage and Museum?  No, wasn't that . . . didn't even go in the museum this year . . . too much other stuff to see and do.  What about seeing all the cool VWs in the show?  Well, there were so many, I probably didn't see half of them.  How 'bout seeing a couple of restored original Herbie's from Herbie Goes Bananas?  Nope, seen 'em before.  So can I name ONE thing that made it worth the trip?  You bet.  Just getting to meet the guy who over the last 40 years has converted his split window bus into a rolling "Ice Fishing Shanty" made the trip worthwhile!     It "proved" what the bumper sticker on Homer's back window says . . . "In some cultures, I'm considered normal."

This sign gives a hint that there just might be a story or two here . . .

At first glace it seems to be a rather ordinary split window bus . . . but look closer and find NOTHING ordinary about this bus . . . or the guy who's been driving it daily for the last 40 years!

This bus was just too awsome for words. The gentleman had a wood burning stove in it, are you ready for this, a PULL STARTER mounted to the rear crank pulley that actually works, a hole cut in the floor that he can ice fish thru, a bed and lawn chairs for the driver and passenger seats. This bus was great!!!!!!!!! It wasn't pretty but still great. :D

I'm surprised The Godfather or Lamar and Cindy hasn't mentioned it yet but the next time any of you see Dee, ask her about the "blue thingies" and pushing or pulling them thru Wal Mart. I think a certain group of about 7 Volks Folks may be banned from returning to Wally World in Effingham, IL.

No, I haven't mentioned it yet, but give me some time. I'm trying to figure out how to explain how 7 adults members of the VolksFolks could have gotten themselves into this comical , hysterical state in front of God and everyone coming in and out of the Effingham "Wally World" . This all took place just inside the the main entrance and lasted about 10 min. while on lookers passed by wondering what in the heck was going on. If I can remember through the fog, I belive it started when Lamar was complaing about  dragging a long blue box containing a canopy through the store not knowing that the box had a set of small wheels on one end. The rest of us were waiting for them at the entrance.  Enter Dee. She announced to the world and other Wally World customers how Lamars   long "Blue Thingy" had wheels and that he could have flipped his "Thingy" over and used the wheels. Well nobody could let that coment pass and it took Dee about 1/2 milliseconds to realized what she had said and had to cross her legs to keep from peeing on herselve. Everything went to hell after that. It continued in the parking lot while Richard and Lamar tried to stuff "Lamars  Thingy" in the trunk of  the Passat amid a lot of "off the wall comments".  Well, I thought the whole thing was over when left  the "Wally World" lot ,that is until we got back to the hotel and it flared up again in the front door of the lobby. We just stayed out side until we were
worn out from the whole thing. Dee just sat down on the curb. I don't think I have laughed that hard or that long in 20 years and get this, We were all sober. You just had to be there.

Linda and I had a very large GOOD TIME at "FunFest" . This was our first time and will not be the last. There were some very nice cars/vans to druel over, but I will have to say that just "Hanging Out" was as much fun   as looking at a whole covey of VWs. The "off grounds" antics of certain VolksFolks was worth the whole trip. Its now Wed. and my head has finally stopped hurting.
I think we are going to have to sit Herb (AKA Mark Trail) down and explain that when the hour hand on your watch goes all the way around (360°) constitutes 12 hrs not 6 hrs.  We drove back through some nice Yankee countryside and small towns. A lot more fun than the Interstate and it took about the same amount of driving time. Ms Dee did a great job of keeping us "Twix The Lines" despite of Herb ,whose eyes glazed over every time we passed a "Wally-World" and pass we did. We didn't need a repeat of the  Effingham "Wally-World" Thingy caper which I'm sure would have reared it ugly head. My body would not have stood another episode and I'm sure that these small town "Wally-Worlds would not have been ready for a hit and run assault from  the Scenic City VolksFolks.
