Dead of Winter Campout - Cloudland Canyon

I can't believe that I've lived less than 20 miles from Cloudland Canyon since 1970 and didn't know how nice the camp ground there was!

This was a much bigger event than I thought it would be . . . they had to open an extra section of the campground to hold everyone.  We didn't get there until late Saturday afternoon, so we were way back in the back.  Our spot was just up the hill from Travis.  We got the bus unloaded and everything set up just before dark.  Eric was there in Rusty hanging out for the day, and headed home just before dark.  Anthony and Misty had got there Friday and had one of the choice spots up on the top of the hill . . . and close to the bathrooms!  The small group of Volks Folks hung out around Travis' camp fire for a while after dark, but Joy, Jesse and I turned in kind of early and tried to figure out how to fit in the floor of a non-camper bus.  As Anthony and Travis had suggested, we used a small electric space heater and kept reasonably warm, but take my advice - If you want to camp in a bus, make sure it's a camper!  It's extremly uncomfortable for two adults to try to curl up in the floor and sleep all night that way!  a bed that we could have straightened out in sure would have made it much nicer.

But, we survived, and even though we were kind of out in the far corner of the campground away from everyone, we enjoyed it.  Next time though, we'll be a little more prepared and get there in time to get a decent spot!

Yes, I too had a pleasant afternoon and evening of camping last weekend.  I got to see people that I hadn't seen since the last VW campout or show.  We never took a hike to the waterfalls though...too much hacky sack going on for that.  We built a fire and cooked our supper with coals from the campfire...hmm...deer meat!  With a -20 degree sleeping bags, propane heater, electric heater, 3 blankets and a belly full of venison tenderloin and some of Joy's delicious stew, I was kept fairly warm...at least while in the bus.  The boom-box was pumping out the hits of a four-man jam band from Vermont the whole time. :music: :smoke:
It even started to snow on Sunday morning while we were preparing to leave. :thumbs-up:
Good food, good friends, good music, good times!
