Dead of Winter Campout

« on: December 26, 2004, 07:50:17 PM »
What's the dates for the Dead of Winter?  Who is organizing it this year . . . or is it just "happening" because it's a tradition?  I looked at the Peach State Transporter's web site, but it seems to have been pretty inactive for the last two years.  Are they sitll around?

Anyway, I've looked everywhere and haven't found ANYTHING posted ANYWHERE on the campout this year.  It's right here in our backyard (at least for me  8) . . . it's about 18 miles from my house).  We need to get the details together and get it out to the rest of the world . . . no one else seems to be doing it!

Dave Easterwood of the Peach State Transporters told me last year that it will be held the first full weekend in February, every year.  I don't think that he promotes it...it's more of an implied thing that if you know about it, then you know about it.

I sent emails last year and posted on the SE forums asking when it was going to happen, but didn't get an answer until a few days before the event.  But I am confident that it is the FIRST FULL weekend in February.

That would be February 4-6, 2005.

I am going to go, barring any catastrophes that might arise. :thumbs-up:

Thanks Travis.  That's what I thought, but I wanted to confirm it before I added it to our events.   8)

My first camping experiance in a bus was the Dead of Winter 3 or 4 years ago.  Homer didn't have any camper stuff installed at the time. I pulled out the middle seat and thought I could get by with an air matress on the floor . . . there is enough square footage there, but the problem is that is SQUARE.  There's not much of a way to get comfortable when you are trying to cram 2 adults into a 4 foot square and it's 20 degrees outside. It didn't take long after that experiance for me to locate a rusted out Westy for cheap and pull the Z-bed and cabinets out and intall them in Homer.  Now I've got room on the foor for a heater and a bed to streatch out on!  As Sponge Bob would say, "I'M READY; I'M READY; I'M READY!"

OK, Lets see if I can "prime the pump" here. Who in there right mine would go sit on top of a mountain in a VW van/camper when its 15 degrees ,freezing your "Yang" off,  teeth chattering, dressed up looking like little brother Randy in "The Christmas Story" and taking upwards to 35 min. to peel down enough to go to the bathroom to sit on a iceberg and all the while trying to "hunker" around a TV to watch the Super Bowl and trying to defrost your M.R.E.s. I will say that this is a tough bunch. I think I will sit in front of my fireplace with my bowl game, a big bowl of hot home made chili. along with my adult bevage .Yum,Yum. 8)

Hey, Chili at the dead of winter campout sounds wonderful! Maybe we should make a big giant vat of it for everyone that goes!

I'm sorry guys but I don't think I (we)will be camping at this event. Camping is supposed to be FUN and I personally don't find anything fun about freezing your butt off. Knocking the ice off the toilet sinched it for me. I, too, will be at home in front of the fire place.

It's on top of a mountian, but they have electricity (a.k.a - HEAT), firepits (a.k.a. - HEAT) and HEATED bathrooms.  Besides, with this global warming thing going on, it's likely to be 60 or 70 degrees . . .

See Herb, "Priming The Pump" works everytime. I love it. I think Russ needs to put a spot on the forum  something like the "Rant" column in the newspaper where folks can pitch a fit or rant or rave about anything.

Come on, it's fun to get away, fun to camp, fun to find creative ways to keep warm...
I made a wrap for the pop-top from the foil/bubble wrap type insulation and the camper stayed toasty with a little electric heater.  Hang out at the campfire for a while, go inside and read, hang out, etc.
You can hike down to the falls and stay warm even in 50 degree weather.  I think I stopped counting at 400 steps as you go down the boardwalk to get to the river.  Fun for some-others, not so much, I know!
Seems like they've done a potluck on Sat. night in the past, but you never know.  Could always bring something in case.  I'm sure it'll get eaten!
