Coker Tire Challenge

« on: August 10, 2011, 10:41:11 AM »
September 15th-18th Coker Tire will host the Coker Tire Challenge. It is a mini version of the Great Race held in the Chattanooga Area. The race is a time endurance rally with a predetermined race course with a predetermined "perfect time" to complete the course. You are provided turn by turn directions (no distances included, only time durations- i.e. 15mph for 35 seconds) and must complete the course as close to perfect time. There are "fudge factors" which help equalized the 100 year old cars with the late models (older is better!).

Its a Friday, Saturday and Sunday race with Friday and Saturday from 8-4 or 5 and Sunday is over by noon. Its really fun and they will teach a Thursday night rally school to help you figure out how to do everything.

I should be driving again this year, but I'm not sure what it will be. On the website (http://www.cokertirechallenge.com/) I'm the first car that pops up from last year ('67 mini)- it helps when your navigator makes their website!

There is also a cruise in on Sept 17th at Coker Tire that everyone should consider coming out to if you can't race. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=134724509952789

went a did some numbers on our car this evening. We are going to be driving a 32 ford pickup. It was a 3 speed with an overdrive, which the overdrive was kinda tricky. You'd shift into overdrive and then go back to first and forget about shifting back into low. So I flubbed a bunch of timed shifts... something to get used to I guess.

Day 1: We got stuck behind a train during the first leg, so we had to turn in a time delay. It was still our worst leg. We missed a turn on the second leg and that slowed us down. We thought we had made it up, but must not have. The Third leg was near flawless. Legs 4, 5 and 6 were flawless and the last leg threw us for a loop and we somehow ended up off a little bit. For driving from 9-4, we were off 28 seconds on the day. Not too bad. But the best part was that we ACED the 4th 5th and 6th legs. We were dead on perfect. We ended up getting the highest number of Aces for the day, even though we were about 23 seconds and 21 places behind first.... Not a great day, but not a bad day either.

We had an awful 8 minute and 30 second hill climb at 15 mph. It was grueling, especially maintaining 15 mph on the switch backs. The car got kinda hot, but with the heat blowing, we were able to keep it cool.

Good job Guys. Sounds like a lot of fun.  Is the P.U. a "Flat Head V8 and a family ride? Interesting overdrive. My '40 Mercury Vert. had a 2 speed Columbia rear end. Tie that with a 3 3/8" bore over a 4" Merc.shaft, Isky cam, Edelbrock 8:1 heads, 3 Strombergs 97 carbs on a Edelbrock intake and a LaSalle tranny all built on a 59AB block. That dang thing would fly and hold its on with a Cadillac powered old Fords/Merc.  Remember there  wasn't such a thing as a small-block Chevy . The first time I saw a 265 small block Chevy I laughed and said that little dinky thing wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a cats butt. But there was this little Guy named Duntov(?) Uh----kind of changed the whole picture. Oh well but still "Long Live the Flat head" ;D ;D

O ,There was 1 car in Brainerd that would humble us up once in awhile at the local drag strip(That would be Brainerd Rd) A '51 Chevy 2 door that had a big GMC 6 cyl. with  a bore over 4.5", 3 carbs, Big cam and a whole lot of other "Goodie" I think from McGurt (?) in Calif. That thing was a holy terror and would surprise a lot of very fast modified V8's  :o :o

It is a flathead. Tons of power in that old truck. The only downside is that it gets close to overheating on any hill climb. Because of the age of the vehicles in race, they drop the speeds down to about 20 mph on steep inclines and even lower (15) on switch backs. Hold 15mph for 8.5 minutes on a hard climb and you just aren't getting enough airflow through the radiator, even with the electric fan. We ended up running the heater and even did a math trick to take the hills faster. We would run the hills 30% faster, which hurt our overall time (but made us early). For every 10% over that we drove for 10 seconds, it adds 1 second to our time. So we'd climb the hills on the stop watch and stop to burn off some time at the top. The added speed kept the engine cool.

Day 2 was great! We kept all of our numbers below 10s for each leg and ended up with 32 seconds on the day which, when you factor our vehicle age, gives us 25.9 seconds for today. Total of 54 seconds on the weekend. Not great, but not bad. Tomorrow is the last day.

The cruise in- TONS of cars showed up. Only 3 or 4 VWs were there and none of them I had seen before. There was a nice split camper that was nicely detailed. His wife was up for work and he drove up to visit over the weekend. Happened to turn down 13th street and they waved him into the cruise in front and center! He had no idea that the cruise in was even going on but he got tons of attention. He ended up leaving because they had somewhere else to be. It was an awesome event.

Tomorrow is the last day.

We had a big screw up. At the top of lookout mtn, we drove for an unknown time at 5mph less than we were supposed to be. We decided to hack off a car two spots in front of us. We tried to catch up 2 minutes to find them and then burn 2 minutes to get back to our time. Once we passed the truck in between us, we got to a check point. We whipped it around with a 3 point turn and back tracked (against the rules to do that in front of a check point). We pass 1 minutes behind the truck and ended up NOT getting disqualified for the whole race AND getting a 1 second on that leg!!!  Best part is that I have a video of both the mix up at the turn AND the catch up/turn around. It was a great time.

We ended up being 50.XX seconds off of perfect which put us in 16th place out of 41. Cameron's sister and her husband got 3rd with 18.48 seconds. 1st place was in the 17 seconds for the whole weekend.

Good times!

(adult language)

You might catch the mistake in the 2nd video around 4:55

Can you tell where the speedometer is?!?!? I didn't realize how very little I looked at the road!
