Buses On The River - Campout @ Erwin, TN

« on: May 29, 2004, 07:07:49 PM »
. . . from a post on the Full Moon Bus Club's forum:

Welcome to Buses On The River, 2004!

http://www.busesontheriver.com

Heard people talking the last few years? Can’t get enough of the breakfast burritos? Wondering what to do the third weekend in August? Pondering the meaning of life, or at least the theory behind the oil-spot award? Oh boy, have I got the campout for you!!!

If you're into mountain biking, watersports, hiking, eating, fishing, or just plain doing nothing, then this is the place you need to be. The middle of August will be hot, but the water will be cool and the pines that we will be camping under will provide ample shade. Experience August as it ought to be experienced... with your VW friends, at the Buses On The River campout!

We'll be camping alongside the Nolichucky River, at the Nolichucky Gorge Campground in Erwin, TN. This campground was built by many rafters, kayakers, and hikers hours of fruitful volunteer efforts. It is positioned within one of the deepest gorges in the entire Southeast, and has great water accessibility, not to mention literally bordering the National Forest and the Appalachian Trail. All beverages and all dogs (who play well with others) are WELCOME within the campground, so it is a perfect spot for us! At only an hour's drive from Asheville and just 2 hours from Knoxville, it makes for the PERFECT TENNESSEE camping experience!

The only meal we’ll be doing together is the famed Breakfast Burrito Extravaganza. Be sure to bring enough for you and yours to eat on and feel free to contribute to the stockade. The groceries signup sheet is on the website for any newbies or forgetful frolickers. If you don’t want to signup, you don’t have to, just bring a little of everything and throw it in… someone WILL eat it!?! Please remember to do your part. We won’t let anyone go hungry, but don’t expect to get fed just because you showed up.

T-shirts will be made AHEAD OF TIME. We will be accepting pre-orders, as soon as we finish the design.

So here’s the low-down:

Buses On The River
August 20-22
At the Nolichucky Gorge Campground in Erwin, TN http://www.angelfire.com/tn/nolichucky/index.html
Cost is $7.00, per person, per night. There may be additional electricity pricing to come. The camp manager, L.D., will NOT take power reservations prior to the event! These will be accessible only through the TN Mechanized and paid for at the event! This is to eliminate pricing confusion. PLEASE let us know if you’re requiring power.

Much wasser,
Travis Adams

Anyone planning on going to this?  Several of us went last year . . . It was a long drive and it rained about half the time we were there but I still enjoyed it.

Here's the scoop from my experiance last year . . .

It's a LONG drive to get there, but it's mostly divided 4 lanes.  The last few miles however are on a sometimes one lane but two direction road out into the middle of nowhere.  You end up in a pretty nice campground on the banks of a wide, shallow river cutting through some of the most scenic mountians around.  Look at a map.  See where Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina meet?  That's the general area.  I never realized you could drive north and east that far past Knoxville and STILL be in TN.  ???

There will be about twice as many busses in the campground than it is designed to hold . . . splits and bays and Vanagons . . . maybe even a few Eurovans.  A handfull of folks driving bugs and one two driving water-cooled VWs camping in tents.  The agenda for the weekend?  Have fun.  They give out door prizes Saturday evening . . . some pretty cool, some pretty lame, but there are enough that everyone gets something.  They usually show some type of movie on a projector screen Saturday night, but it rained this out last year.  Other than that, you can hang out at your campsite and do nothing, wonder around and get to know your neighbors, admire the nice buses, get ideas on creative ways to use duct tape and bondo from some of the not so nice buses . . . take a dip in the COLD mountian water, fish, hike, take pictures, go rafting . . . whatever turns you on.  Doesn't matter what you do, as long as you have fun doing it . . . If you get tired of walking around the campground, you can catch a ride on the "boat" . . . the USS Farfromfloat'n drives all around the campground all weekend long.

About lunch time Sunday, it's time to break up camp and head out.  Sunday afternoon/evening . . . drive home.  It's a long drive home too.  But, for some reason, it didn't seem as long as the drive to get there.

Monday morning, go to work with a whole lot less stress than you left with on Friday.

Of course, that's just my take on the campout.  I had a ball last year!  That might have been because of a door prize I HAD to get rid of because they had given it to and underage member of our group . . . but I WAS having fun BEFORE that!    :D

This campout was alot of fun. Eric and I went 2 years ago and Eric went last year too. I'm not sure yet if we are going. That Saturday is my birthday and I wanted to go out, but then I realized this campout was the same weekend. ???

I just realized today that I had a prior commitment for this weekend.  I won't be able to make it this year.   :(
