A vehicle can not be entered into multiple classes. The Scenic City Volks Folks reserve the right to re-classify a vehicle if it does not meet the criteria for the class in which it was registered. We also reserve the right to create or delete classes as necessary. Judges will attempt to notify owners if re-classification becomes necessary.

Definitions and Notes for Air-Cooled Classes:

Early – 1967 or Older

Late – 1968 to 1979

Survivors – The vehicle is stock and has not been restored since it was new. Components should show wear, but still be presentable. Stock replacement parts and repairs OK. Vehicles will be judged on both condition and originality (i.e. – an original seat cover with a slight tear and fading is judged higher than a new replacement seat cover).

Stock – For the most part, the vehicle is basically as it left the factory (Restorations OK). No body modifications. Any replacement parts should have a stock appearance. Vehicle may have mild custom modifications as listed below.
 • Paint and Body – Does not have to be the original color, but must not distract from a stock appearance (Maximum 2 colors, no heavy metallics, flames, etc.). Must have original style trim and bumpers.
 • Wheels/Tires – Common styles of aftermarket wheels OK as long as tires remain near stock size. Very slight lowering allowed.
 • Interior – must have stock style seat covers, door panels, dash. Aftermarket stereo system allowed (as long as it does not distract from an otherwise stock appearance).
 • Engine – Stock to very slightly modified. Dual carbs, common styles of aftermarket exhaust systems OK.

Custom – Anything that doesn’t fit in a stock class.

Type II – All Buses, Micro-Buses, Transporters, Trucks, Single Cabs, Double Cabs, etc.

Daily Driver – Must be the owner’s main source of daily transportation and MUST be driven to the show! A Daily Driver may be entered into the appropriate show class instead.

Resto-Custom – All years and models of air-cooled VWs allowed. MUST have stock paint and body (see stock definitions) and stock bumpers (Euro bumpers without over-riders OK). Stock or Custom interior. May be lowered. Must have highly modified engine. Vintage accessories a plus. NOTE – This is a highly competitive class! Anything that fits in the “Resto-custom” class will fit in the appropriate “Custom” class, but not all “Custom” vehicles will fit in the Resto-Custom class.

Rail Buggy – Driven – Rail Buggies that show signs of use and/or abuse!

Rail Buggy – Show – Rail Buggies that are built to show and have seen little (if any) off-road action.

Baja and Off-Road – Mostly Beetles, but any air-cooled VW (except rail buggies) could fit if it has been modified to go off-road (raised suspensions, body lift kits, oversized tires, chopped fenders, etc.).

Dune Buggies – Must have fiberglass body.

Kit Cars and Trikes – Vehicles built from kits on a stock or modified VW Chassis (except Rails and Dune Buggies) OR Any three-wheeled VW based vehicle.

Rat Rods – Stock to heavily modified body. Original paint with heavy wear and some rust OR painted with flat paint or primer. Minimal interior. Engine and Suspension – Anything goes.

Anti-Show Class – Low and Fast. Mostly original body and interior, un-restored with lots of patina, but mechanically sound. Vintage accessories a plus. Must have “attitude.”

Special Interest - Tractors, Air Compressors, Lawnmowers, etc.  Anything “partially” VW

International Class - All Years, Air or Water Cooled.  VWs not built for the US Market including, but not limited to Mexican Beetles, Fridolins, Isis, etc.  Excludes Notchbacks and Type 3 Ghias (they will be judged in the Type 3 class).

No pistons on ANY class trophies, just one on Best Paint, one on Best Interior, one on Best Engine, and three on Best of Show . . . times two (for air and water).  The only other pistons are one on the President's award and the Dealership Appreciation trophy.

14 total.

Notches are type 3's and available in the US. Now say Fridolins and type 34 Razor Ghias are also type 3 's but were not available on the US market So that makes them super rare and cool. 8) I'm sure somewher in South America they have weird production models that we have never seen.

Notch -backs were not sold in the U.S at the dealerships , but a lot of them were brought in by returning military and bootleged through Canada. 1966 fastback and squareback were the only legal type -3 brought in.

Your 64 Sq.back is Euro.   The term" Variant" was common on these cars. If I remember correctly the "Notch" came out in Germany in 1961 along with the Sq-Back. They were 1500 cc single port with 1 single barrel carb mounted over the #1 cly. Both cars later were tagged "Variant S"  These cars came with 1500cc,single port with twin Solox carbs and domed pistons that boosted the compression to 8:1. You had to burn premium fuel to keep the "knocking" down .  These engines had a problem of wearing  the main bearing out early or "beating" the case out on the #2 journal. They were very fast for the day.  A lot of these cars came to U.S. via Canada.  The Sq-Back and Fast-Back were introduced in the USA in 1966. and came with a1600 cc single port W/ twin carbs.  In 1967 they came with 1600 cc Dual port W/ twin carbs. In 1968 fuel injection was introduced. Production lasted through mid 1974 I think. Then the Bunny showed up. Whew!!! enough already
