You wont believe this, at least I didn't....Explosion?

« on: September 10, 2008, 05:53:16 PM »
Ok here is the story:
I was supposed to pick up ASBug today. I call and they say all is well come on and get it.  I leave Chickamauga at 3:50 to get home pick up the wife and get the ASBug.  I get home and my wife said that I needed to call the Paint place.  I call and they said that right after I spoke to him the people at the clean up area closed the driver's door and the REAR glass exploded.  Not poped out, EXPLODED.  Has any one ever seen this before.  I had them pull the rear out the glass when they painted the car and they had replaced it with a new gasket (empi) from Dalton.

I know that the doors sealed tight, but not tight enough to EXPOLDE the rear glass....

I have a feeling that they didn't have the rear in right and when they slammed the door that the rear poped out and hit the ground.
(I am going to need a new sticker for the back: SCVF and Automatic Stickshift- Great.

OK now I need a 1972 and up rear window. They are going to buy a new one if they can find one.  Lamar in Dalton doesn't carry them.  I read that in 1972 they expanded the rear glass (is this the last change to the back?)

Any one know where I can get a new rear window?

Any and all help is appreciated...
I have been W/O my ASBug for 16 days now and I am having the DT's bad for my bug.....
Thanks,
KC

I have never heard of that happening.   I have heard of people rolling up all their windows and then slam the door blowing the radio speaker out

I would check with Grant's Auto Glass in Chattanooga: (423) 265-1631‎. They were able to order and install a front windshield for my bus, so maybe they have a source for a rear window for a bug. And they could install it properly so it won't explode. I'm with you, that sounds like they put it in wrong.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, I know you've been without your bug for a while now...I can sympathize. We can hook you up with another club sticker, and I hope the automatic stick shift sticker isn't too hard to find either.

Originals melted off and the repop that I had was one of only 25 ever made....
Lucky me.

The 1968 AutoStick Bugs had a special Chrome "Automatic Stickshift" emblem that replaced the standard "volkswagon" emblem on the back lid.
Kinda like the "1300" emblems did earlier.  Volkswagon, attempting to maximize profits, decided that water transfer decals were WAY cheaper so in 1969 the swapped to an 18" X 3" decal that was stuck in the back window.  The problem is that they are as fragile as the thin decals that you used to put onto your model cars and airplanes.  The gentleman that I bought mine through, had 25 reproduced on a static cling media.
He only made 25 so IF I am able to salvage mine I'll let you know his #.

The dealers were supposed to apply these at the dealership.  This happended even rarer than the little plastic "sunbug" emblems that were to be put on the later models....

The little decal that I had in my back window was correct, but so many people had never even seen an AutoStick much less the 35+ year old decal, so they don't realize that it is correct.

I have alot of people that think that it is a joke of somekind....
I just need to buy Zen's 1968 ant farm beetle and take off the emblem and put it on my ASBug...

I'll try to find the photo of the original that I have somewhere.

Thanks,
KC

I have a rear window for a Beetle.  Now if it is the right size for your year, I don't know.  Maybe we could meet up and discover the answer to that question.

And you could finally get back your cute little pink shoe...

If all else fails I know nome people who make decals. If you can get me a good picture or one to use they can make a replacement for a reasonable fee. Also they can make copies of t-shirts if you have one that you like and it gets old or damaged they can copy it.
