I just learned something this evening. Sometime back in the 80's the original owner of a 66 Deluxe Bus sold it to someone at a bodyshop. The new owner pulled the engine out to use in something else. Several years later after all 4 wheels had locked up, the body shop guy gave it away. The new owner had good intensions and was planning on fixin' it up and putting it back on the road. Like many VW projects we take on, it just never happened so finally several more years down the road he gave it away to a friend. Several years later this friend was going through a divorce and had a recycling guy come pick it up to haul it to the crusher. That's where I found it just hours before it was to make it's final trip to be recycled into soup cans and what-not. After a little negotiation, I bought it for a hundred dollars. For about a year it's been sitting in my back yard.
I just learned "The Rest Of the Story" this afternoon when I was at the parts store. The guy who got it from the body shop told me about it. He said when his friend was going through his divorce, he told his friend he would like to have it back if he wasn't going to do anything with it. His friend told him he had already had it hauled off.
It finally hit me a few minutes ago . . . I've got it bad. I paid $100 for a bus that the three previous owners had given away!
