The rain and @$$%&?! drivers!

« on: January 13, 2006, 05:46:37 PM »
Today, I left out of the driveway at my house with the sun shining down.  It had been raining, so I was glad that it had quit.  I was on my way to get Talia from school.  The rain started again around the East Brainerd/Ooltewah-Ringold intersection.  I was almost in front of Silas Marley's (near Hurricane Creek on East Brainerd), when the vehicles in front of me came to a quicker stop than I had anticipated.  I downshifted to second and put on the brakes.  I started to slide a little, and the rear end came around to my left just a tad.  I made the stop without hitting anyone, but the guy behind me hit me.  I felt a little bump, not a crunch.  I put my blinker on to turn into Silas Marley's and turned in, thinking that they guy would follow.

Boy, was I wrong.  He took off.  No, he didn't just take off...he sped off.  It was a blue truck with wooden crates in the bed.  I got only the first two letters of his TN tag.  I couldn't believe that he didn't notice that he had hit me.  Or maybe he did, and just couldn't have any police around.  Either way, I think he was totally inconsiderate not to stop and see if there was any damage.

Which there wasn't, by the way.  He might have pushed in just a little bit the dent that was already on the rear bumper.

Well Travis, to add to your grips, after the guy sped off and even if you had got all of the tag, the chances of the police doing anything further than taking a report, is slim to none. I find it hard to believe how much things have changed since I retired. It seems there is no dedication, compasion or caring any more. The "new breed" of cop is just there for a pay check and will readily tell you that.    :?

We had an accident several years back (1996???) in front of Buster Brown Apparel.  I was taking Lamar back to work after lunch and a drunk driver hit me while we were waiting to turn into their parking lot.  He didn't stay around either.  Several people who worked at Buster Brown recognized him and gave the police his name, phone number and his girlfriends name and number and of course nothing ever came of it.  He had been at the guardshack earlier that day very drunk.  Our uninsured motorist insurance had to take care of it.  We had only had this car a couple of weeks and had to have a new bumper put on it.  We were lucky no one was hurt.  It might not be like that with the next person he runs into.

I agree Herb. The trend now seems to be to hire people with "degrees" to be in law enforcement. Dont get me wrong, there is not a thing wrong with higher learning. I agree that it does give a different breed of persons to choose from. However from "Real Life" experience, a masters degree will not prevent getting your butt shot. Nothing beats "experience" and good training to do a good job. That holds true with any job in my opinion.

It always surprised me how most hit and runs were given very low priority by most departments. The only ones I ever worked for that pursued them were departments with good traffic divisions. And the same can be said of stolen vehicles, law enforcement ranks the recovery of stolen autos extrememly low in my eyes.
