I was heading to work this morning and stopped at a side road to pull onto Main St. in LaFayette. Looking north, you can see for several blocks, but looking south, there is a row of hedges right at the edge of the sidewalk and you can't see until you get the nose of you your vehicle out in the road. I've been taking this same route to work almost every weekday for almost 20 years. I know the drill . . . look towards the square . . . when the southbound traffic is clear, ease out and look south. It's always worked. I did it this morning and after waiting on 3 or 4 cars heading south to get past me. There was one more southbound car headed my way, but it was 3 blocks away on the other side of the square . . . the speed limit on Main St. through the square is 25. So, I eased the nose of my S-10 out in the road until I could see past the hedges . . . nothing heading north, and out of the corner of my eye I could still see the headlights of the southbound car up near the square, so I let out on the clutch and off we go . . . Now, the sun isn't up yet and it's storming, but there are steeetlights and I can plainly see any headlights within a half mile of me . . .

. . . what I can't see is this pail greyish beige SUV with no headlights that is by now directly in front of me. It's like it appeared from thin air! Couldn't get my foot on the brake quick enough and he didn't swerve at all. I clipped the right rear corner of his SUV with the right front corner of my S-10. Not a whole lot of damage to either vehicle, but my streak of almost 37 and half years of driving without a reportable accident has ended.
If it's dark and/or if it's raining, PLEASE, turn on your headlights!!!!!
