Remember: Lights ON When Raining (especially before sunrise)

« on: December 10, 2012, 03:18:01 PM »
I was heading to work this morning and stopped at a side road to pull onto Main St. in LaFayette.  Looking north, you can see for several blocks, but looking south, there is a row of hedges right at the edge of the sidewalk and you can't see until you get the nose of you your vehicle out in the road.  I've been taking this same route to work almost every weekday for almost 20 years.  I know the drill . . . look towards the square . . . when the southbound traffic is clear, ease out and look south.  It's always worked.  I did it this morning and after waiting on 3 or 4 cars heading south to get past me.  There was one more southbound car headed my way, but it was 3 blocks away on the other side of the square . . . the speed limit on Main St. through the square is 25.  So, I eased the nose of my S-10 out in the road until I could see past the hedges . . . nothing heading north, and out of the corner of my eye I could still see the headlights of the southbound car up near the square, so I let out on the clutch and off we go . . .  Now, the sun isn't up yet and it's storming, but there are steeetlights and I can plainly see any headlights within a half mile of me . . .  :o . . . what I can't see is this pail greyish beige SUV with no headlights that is by now directly in front of me.  It's like it appeared from thin air!  Couldn't get my foot on the brake quick enough and he didn't swerve at all.  I clipped the right rear corner of his SUV with the right front corner of my S-10.  Not a whole lot of damage to either vehicle, but my streak of almost 37 and half years of driving without a reportable accident has ended.

If it's dark and/or if it's raining, PLEASE, turn on your headlights!!!!!

The officer said for insurance purposes, it was my fault, but he didn't give either of a citation.  A witness stuck around to tell the officer that the guy didn't have his lights on, but I guess that's OK if raining and the sun hasn't come up yet IF your car is the color of the mist in the air.   ::)

That's bologna! It's not your fault if they don't obey the laws! Well... If you want to know how to get a new vehicle, find out that cops schedule and switch the lights off!

How did the other driver handle it? Did they acknowledge that they had screwed up?

The other guy was a Hendrix . . . probably a distant cousin.  Not exactly the way I would have liked to have met him, but he handled it well.  There was also a witness that stuck around to tell the officer that he didn't have his lights on.

I looked in the daylight when I left work yesterday and there is a little more damage to my truck than I thought.  The corner of my hood and fender did make contact with his SUV and got wrinkled a little.  I need a new headlight bezel (The headlight is ok, but the bezel has a marker light and reflector on the side of it that's broken off).  I don't think I'll worry about trying to fix the rest of the damage . . . I mean, even without that damage, the truck is an '84 S10 with some other dents and rusty spots.  Other than the bezel, the damage is hardly noticable.

Atleast it wasn't Homer although if you would have been in Homer you would not have had to pull your nose out in to traffic to see what was coming. Homer could have saved the day.

It was 2007 Toyota Highlander . . . it has a crease about a foot long on the right rear fender leading back to the broken taillight cause by the corner of my hood and fender and then a little more damage down lower where my bumper caught it.  I picked up the police report and turned it in to State Farm.  The lady at State Farm told me that he is the Hendrix that used to run Hendrix body shop here in LaFayette.  So, I'm sure he'll fix it himself . . . after State Farm cuts him a check.  The good news is my insurance covers 100% of the cost for his repair.  I don't have full coverage, so I'm on my own to fix my truck.  I stuck the broken piece of trim I picked up back in the bumper and I may try to use a come-along to pull the bumper back out a little, but all I really need to replace is the headlight bezel . . . and if it wasn't for the missing marker light, I probably wouldn't replace that.

2007 was supposed to have daytime running lights.
He must have disabled them = against the law.
Take his A** to court.

I don't think SUVs and trucks are required to have Daytime Running Lights.  Joy's 2010 Kia Soul doesn't have them.

There are no federal laws requiring DRLs on any vehicle in the US.

My '97 GMC Jimmy has DRL, but Joy's Soul, built 13 years later, doesn't have them.  I thought they were a requirement and was kind'a shocked when I realized the Kia didn't have them.  Then I thought it must be just a requirement for passinger cars . . . but someone here at work who has a Kia sedan of some kind said his car doesn't have them either.  So, I think Russ is right.  Most manufacturers put DRL on their vehicles because it really is a good idea . . . but I don't think it's a federal requirement.

They are required in certain other countries like Canada, so a lot of auto makers just put them in standard.

If I'm not mistaken, some states require that lights be on at all times. I'm pretty sure Canada has the DRL requirements.

I like how VW set theirs to come on when the parking brake was off...except for that time that I thought the lights were on, when really it was just the daytime running lights.

I don't really like the auto headlights because people become complacent and forget to actually think when they need headlights or not. When did cars become "smarter" than us? I don't think they are!
